When should I start calling Branch to get an open slot? Is it needs of the Army no matter what right now or is there still options to get to choose where you want to go if open slots are available? If I were to recommend in steps this is what I would say....
(1) If you already have a school date then make sure you’re getting ready physically - inquire about the Airborne physical with your PCM.
(2) Get an updated EDAS (open assignment) printout from your Career Counselor or S-1 based on your projected MOS once you complete Airborne school (91B2P) to see if there will be any assignments coming up for Italy.
(3) I wouldn’t bother calling branch; instead send them a carefully crafted email outlining your intent to attend Airborne school IOT get an assignment to 173d ABN Div in Italy.
Now understand that normally when branch pays for a school they usually make their assignment decisions based on the need to fill their own priorities so you have to be flexible. Especially since you will be part of a small specialty (P - Parachutists). This is why it would be a good idea to stay in touch with your branch just to get an idea of what their plans for you may be. There is always the possibility of being able to dictate where you go depending on how well your branch is working with you...kind of a “strike while the iron is hot” type of thing. Lol. Italy I believe still is a possibility with lots of luck. School is a breeze! Just get used to running and running and more running.
