Dont carry the chip on your soldier especially at a new unit. The trials and errors I had to figure how to influence others without being overbearing was a good skill I carried over through BLC and transitioning into being a sergeantResponse by SGT Adam Jones made May 25 at 2018 3:55 AM2018-05-25T03:55:13-04:002018-05-25T03:55:13-04:00SPC Private RallyPoint Member3659355<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>If you haven't brushed up upon it, look into filling out a DA form 638 and a counseling statement, at the minimum. Make sure you fully utilize the counseling statement to the full ability. It's an extremely effective tool as a leader. Know the fine line between position and grade and don't assume you know more than anybody. Tread lightly as well because you may have taken that slot from somebody internally. All a fine balance.Response by SPC Private RallyPoint Member made May 25 at 2018 7:19 AM2018-05-25T07:19:38-04:002018-05-25T07:19:38-04:00CSM Eric Biggs3659381<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Be the best leader you can be and the leader you would want to follow. Get to BLC ASAP. Go out of your way to look out for your subordinates best interests and always be the proverbial "shit umbrella". Don't ever assume you know better than anyone subordinate to you, listen to your Soldiers, then make a decision and execute. So you're an NCO then, that comes with a certain level of respect for rank. That said, your guys are going to need an adjustment period. I know a guy who I still catch myself calling him by name instead of CPL because he just got promoted. You're going to a different unit so that shouldn't be much of a problem.Response by SPC Private RallyPoint Member made May 25 at 2018 8:32 AM2018-05-25T08:32:58-04:002018-05-25T08:32:58-04:00SGT Dave Tracy3659626<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I was an E-4(p) who once slid into an Army Reserve E5 slot; from my experience I say expect that THEY expect you to get promoted sooner rather than later, so do what you must to make that happen.Response by SGT Dave Tracy made May 25 at 2018 9:24 AM2018-05-25T09:24:41-04:002018-05-25T09:24:41-04:00MSG Danny Mathers3660881<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Many new E-5's have been in your position. I budded up with a solid NCO and took his example. Just take your time and observe your soldiers and leaders. Your new Platoon Sargeant will mentor you into what is required of the unit's standard. You should show up at drill looking sharp, in dress uniform, hair cut and highly shines shoes. First impressions go a very long way in what kind of NCO you are. Leadership is learned at all levels not just schools. Learn everything about your MOS you can until your class date comes up.Response by MSG Danny Mathers made May 25 at 2018 6:00 PM2018-05-25T18:00:44-04:002018-05-25T18:00:44-04:001SG Private RallyPoint Member3661606<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Are you going to be wearing stripes?
