GySgt Craig Averill - You're a retiree. You're not senior to anyone. Well, maybe you've civilian employees. That'd be nice as I wish everyone success, but irrelevant to the discussion. In any case, my only contribution to the discussion was the official minimum GT per MOS as published by the Marines. I had no official position on the discussion, and I never disagreed with you, as the 03 field is generally acknowledged as the drip pan of the service, so what you think went over my head seems known only to you.

SFC Michael Hasbun -

My comment was a Comment to the initial Post, your post was in response to my comment and with the wise ass addition to it of "In case you guys want to fight it out"

If you wanted to contribute to the conversation you should have posted your response to the cadet and NOT to me.

Yes! I am a retiree, thank you for pointing that out.

I am done explaining myself to you as I made a comment and many understood what my comment met, you were the exception. So with that it does indeed seem my comment went well over your head.

Good Day and please do not further reply to my post, if you have more to say, do so to the cadet.

GySgt Craig Averill - I joined in 1980, my GT at the time was 126, I scored good for avionics electronics, but my recruiter said I should go open contract. (Guess he had a quota to fill) Ya, guess what, 0311. However, I loved it. I told my recruiter I wanted to travel, that I wanted to be where the action was, and that's what I got. However while I was in the infantry, I went to NBC school and was on the Monitor Survey Team, I got some prime TAD duties and when I re-enlisted I went 7222, HAWK Missile Systems Operator / HAWK Missile Systems Controller. Then after HAWK school, when I reported in to 3rd LAAM Blt, there was a position open, and instead of reporting to a company, I became one of the Blt NBC, NCO's.

The point is that yes, a low score may put you in the infantry, but you can still end up there with a decent score. It's all dependent on the needs of the corps at the time.

I enlisted in 1968 during the peak of the Vietnam War and if you got a low score or was drafted (Marine Corps only drafted for two years 68 and 69) you got the Infantry. The Marine Corps did then and still does have LIMITED FUNDS as their budget is nothing like the Navy's or Army's, the Marine Corps invested their money wisely and if you were only going in for 2 years, most likely 0311 or some other little or no school for training, 3 years got you a better MOS, but still not the bigger investment schools, 4 years and you got the best schools. I spent nearly my whole first year in Basic, ITR and Aviation Ordnance School. If the Marine Corps has more money now than they did then, Great! as back then, it was still the Dept of the Navy and we got all of the scraps.

If you were happy in the grunts, that is great. I was on the very first Nuclear Emergency Team (N.E.T.) the Marine Corps had, matter-of-fact they didn't even have a school for it and I had to go to CBR (Chemical, Biological and Radiological) School at Scholfield Barracks. Thr FMFPac NET team was formed because of a plane going down off of the coast of Spain with a Nuke on board. There was a mad rush between the Russians and the Americans to get to it, I guess for the Nuke technology of the other. I don't remember how that turned out if they ever did recover the nuke or not.

Anyways, if you were happy, that is all that counts and hopefully your training was worth something on the outside. In my day, the Marine Corps only invested in Marines that were going to be around for awhile and not the short termers or reservists.

First off, you join the Marine Corps to be a Marine, no matter what field you opt for. Secondly don't start off your service worrying about your ASVAB score. You want the 03 field, sign the papers, and do your best.

I was a marine 0311, making a grade at all is a good thing. Lots of idiots, both in charge and taking orders. Best thing to do is rise above your peers. So as your told, and stay in stellar shape. You'll do fine.
