I want to reenlist? Who do I talk to first?

So you want to reenlist do you?  Ok, who have you spoken to?  Do you know who your unit's Career Counselor is?  Where is he/she located?  Has your Commander discussed continued service with you?  Will your Commander support you reenlisting?  What options are available to you?  Are you enrolled in the Married Army Couples Program (MACP) or the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)?  When are you available to PCS?  What schools are available to you?  What incentives does your unit offer if you reenlist for stabilization?  ARE YOU IN THE WINDOW?  WHAT IS THE REENLISTMENT WINDOW?<div><br></div><div>These are all important questions!  I want to know what you are doing to take control of your career.  I'd also like to hear what your leadership is doing to help counsel you on reenlistment?  </div>

Great post MSG, I think this is a very good start for many of our junior SMs to include many junior NCOs as well.

My company's retention NCO answers these questions for us. I would recommend that soldiers start at the company level before talking to the Career Counselor. I started the process on 18 September, which was 12 days before my window opened, and finally signed my new contract in January. I signed for 5 more years with an assignment to Korea.

For soldiers whose ETS falls in fiscal year 2015 (1 October 14 through 30 September 2015), the window is open right now. The window can close at ANY TIME due to the draw-down, so soldiers shouldn't assume that the Army will wait for them to make a decision.

You bring up a great point. For those of you who wish to reenlist, get in to the reenlistment NCO/Career Counselors office as soon as you can. The longer you wait to make your decision, the higher your chances of options changing or the piviledge of reenlistment even going way. Precision retention is the buzz word this year. Budget restraints and a draw down impact the number of Soldiers our Army can retain. The days of offering reenlistment to each and every Soldier are behind us. It's imperative Soldiers now focus their attention towards personal and professional development. Civilian and military education is a must! Stay agile, stay focused, and stay engaged.
