I was promoted into a different unit, do I have to stay the 12 months with them before I can transfer?

I need some clarification on something. While I was on ADOS orders I was promoted to E6 effective date 1 JAN 15. The promotion reassigned me to a different unit, but the transfer order didn't come until much later with effective date of 31 DEC 15 because RLAS was down. I'm trying to transfer units but they're saying they won't let me because I need to spend a year with them.

It may be different in the reserves, but on Active Duty you can be promoted and transferred the day after or vice versa.

Technically no, the gaining unit can transfer you for any reason. But you as a Soldier don't have the option, it has to be initiated by the unit.
But since a year has passed, is this still in question?

The wise solution is not to burn your bridges, yes you want to transfer, but you need to stay and fulfill 12 months. Needs vs Wants decisions wisely made makes friends the opposite makes opponents.

Typically, yes. However, there are rare exceptions.

I work as a UAT in the Reserves and I've seen it work if the Commander of the unit you were promoted into writes a memo allowing you to transfer prior to the 12 month mark.

SSG Kirkpatrick, as an "Old UA" I would say that you should stay with the new unit at least 12 months. Please keep in mind the whole idea for cross unit promotions is to infuse new blood into the unit and to assist in your professional development. Yes you are outside of your comfort zone but that is a good thing because that is when you will learn the most. I am not saying never go back to your old unit if there is an opening, but give the new one a chance. New unit with a new promotion....what an adventure.

To help clarify, my home unit was back in Ft.Worth, when I came on ADOS orders I PCS'd here to Ft.Gordon in Georgia and now work here full time as a DAC. The unit I was reassigned to is a support unit out of Ft.Jackson, which I found odd since there are MI units here on Ft.Gordon they could have reassigned me to instead which would've been much closer.

I had sorta of the same thing. My commander had to release me and say that I could transfer without issue. The reason should be a valid one, like you have. Good luck

By regulation Yes. However the losing unit commander can waive this.
