A GO pretty much runs the entire thing, so be ready for a lot of bureaucracy. However, Fort Hood's civilian city is Killeen. Plenty to the there, but the cops DO NOT allow you to get away with anything when you're stopped. Fort Hood is about 45mins - 1hr away from the city of Austin, about 3hrs from Houston, and 2.5hrs from Dallas-Fort Worth. Each of those cities has a vibrant night life, and weekends. There is plenty to do, you just gotta want to do it. If you’re living off post check out Copperas Cove. Hood itself is where morale goes to die unfortunately. If you’re a decent NCO though you’ll be able to pull your joes out of the funk and keep the Mood up the best you can. Let me know if I am wrong in that assumption. All the FA assets have been realigned to BDE Combat Teams or assigned to provide FA support to a specific BDE Combat Team. I was in DIVARTY many years ago as a M577A1 Command Track driver for BN S3. We spent a lot of time in the field doing FTXs. The entire month of May every year was our Crewmember Qualification fire missions that has probably changed now to fit the BDE Combat Teams Training schedules. Count on spending lots of time in the motor pool keeping your vehicle in tip top shape. Since we are involved in Aphganistan be prepared to do an NTC rotation to ensure you are fully mission capable to operate in desert and mountain environments. III Corps usually deploys once every three or four years to the combat zone. Hard to say how many BCTs will deploy at any one time. Killeen has little or no tourist type attractions with a pretty high crime rate. Averaging one shooting a week city wide. A smart man told me a long time ago that nothing good happens in Killeen after 22:00 hrs. If you are married I suggest you live off post as on post housing is very old and degrading rapidly. Poor state of Fort Hood family housing has been a major news item for the past six months. Lots of interesting stuff to do in Waco and Austin both within one hour drive of Killeen. Austin traffic is rated as fourth worst driving conditions in the USA following LA, Chicago, and Houston that have worse traffic. If you like hunting and fishing there is plenty of that on Fort Hood but it isn't free any more. Now you have to pay for hunting access but most fishing areas are still free of charge. Your Fort Hood gaining unit is supposed to assign you a mentor to assist you with these type of issues unless you are going to an unspecified unit then no one will be assigned until you show up then it is too late. I hope this helps you somewhat. I live in Killeen but I retired a few years ago. This area is great for family and for single soldiers. Tons of stuff to do with 2.5 hrs driving distance.
