CW3 Kevin Storm 990572

Just got the word from my BDE S-1, a fellow Warrant, my Fed-Rec packet has been approved and I should see orders shortly for CW-3. This will be my last promotion, and it has proven to be the longest, and hardest of all of them. Having been tagged as a diabetic post deployment, I have lived in MEB/PEB hell. I won't say the school situation was much better, as the wars tended to shrink the number of courses available form year to year. If it were not for the support of my fiancée I would of packed it in some years ago.

When I was a single guy I used to think it was corny as hell to see guys talk about their wives and family when they got promoted, now I get it! How about the rest of you, who helped you through your careers? I will be changing that (P) to a 3! No matter what happens, you gave it 150% of yourself to the nation and the Army. I can't speak personally of it (I got the dear John letter before redeployment), but my friends wouldn't be where they are without the constant support (including the nagging) of their wives. I also think of how I felt vs. the Soldiers who had someone there for them when we redeployed. Household 6 plays a bigger role than she gets credit for. Gen O was right. Make sure that you pick out a few bright people and pass on something that would be lost otherwise. Army, unit, and MOS cultures can not be found in any publication, they are taught by great leaders and passed from generation to generation.

My family was important in helping me along the road to the finish line. When you are young the adventure factor can keep you going. Then after a while the job becomes that, a job. The job can be difficult to do and in some cases to keep. It is great to share in this time of celebration with you.

I too found it funny how, not in just promotions but whenever something good happens, people thank their significant others. Then once I stopped and realized that without a good, strong, supportive, backing, none of what I did would have been possible. The same continues on after the military as well. While the pure human side of our brains would like to take sole credit for things, we quickly realize that if it wasn't for some key people being in key locations, we would not have the success we have.

I credit all of those in my life that supported me during my time in and those that support that me know. From my parents to my children, they all play a critical role. I can't tell you how much support I've been shown, even in the simplest act like coming home to pick up my children and being welcomed with a huge hug and a "Hi Daddy". I was promoted to major after I was forced off active duty due to two non-selected fro promotion.
As a mid-grade captain I became a Christian. After not being selected to LTC, my rater suggested I contact some flag officers I had worked for and request their endorsements. I contacted three who had been promoted to 2 start Generals and they all sent letters of endorsement to the promotion board. I was promoted to LTC in April 2000 just one before I was due to be forced out in May.
My wife and I had prayed that I be selected for LTC. I was and am very thankful that I was promoted and was able to serve my nation once again on active duty after I was mobilized Nov 2001 through May 2004. Others were sad I was not promoted to COL; but, God gave me what I asked for [promotion to LTC] and that was sufficient for me.
COL Mikel J.
