The Air Force throws out a lot of great people with sharp skills and nothing but dedication, destroying their careers and livelihood (and turning the service into crap as well). For me this came at 15 years of service. After spending years to try and rebuild our lives along a different path if the Air Force offered a "chance" to serve again at a lower grade I'd just shake my head and tell them where to go. People need more consistently and to be able to plan their future out because we all get old at some point and can't start over all the time. My branch of service has proven it doesn't care about human capital and is not willing to fight for what is right. At times it seems as if it is a political organization rather than a branch of the military. I cannot recommend any your person serve in today's Air Force. We should all be serving right now, without rank or pay. Sadly, most aren't.

We should be voting. At the heart of most of the growing political rancor lies the fact that politicians are flying blind. They don't really know what We the People want. We don't bother to tell them. They only know what They Who Contribute The Most want.

We should be forming ourselves into community-based emergency response teams. If the government doesn't have the good sense to reestablish Civil Defense as a viable agency, we should take it upon ourselves. Why should people sit helplessly on their roofs waiting for rescue or be herded into a stadium or FEMA camps while the military goes door-to-door illegally confiscating guns as they did following a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina. In addition to natural disasters, we now have the threat of terrorism to contend with. We need Civil Defense, not more expensive, ineffective government agencies like Homeland Defense which is doing little good and leaching away our rights.

We, especially we veterans, should be helping our communities organize and train militias to combat terrorism. Our military is very effective fighting terrorists at a distance, but how effective will they be if terrorism seeps into our communities?

We veterans should be helping veterans just as we helped one another on the battlefield. The Veterans Administration is broken and, just like all government agencies, it is politically resistant to repair. It may never be truly effective, efficient, or economical. Join the American Legion or the VFW or both and help. My father who was a CSM retired in '87 informed me that in the 60s many were called back to duty with one additional stripe added to their rank. If my services were really needed once again, the Army would need to either promote me to the next grade or higher. In nearly the 30 years that I have served in the Army and many of my friends who have served in the various branches of the Armed Forces have informed me practically the same story. The services are not the same as they were while they were growing up in the armed forces and while they were serving as a soldier, marine, sailor or an airman. The discipline was not there not only for the enlisted corps but also for the officers which was a mess. The soldiers that I trained while I was an instructor at the Military Intelligence School and Center and later I was assigned to be a Platoon Sergeant at an Advance Individual Training company. A few of my students and trainees corresponded with me once they were graduated and assigned at their current units would describe that the Army has changed in the short time that they were in and they looked forward to their completion of their obligation out of the Army. As many of our fellow veterans and retirees have stated that the military would get a rude awakening if we return to duty once again because many of us will not bend like a palm tree due to the countless of changes that happened while we were out of uniform or even some of us those changes happened while we were still serving. They charge in not thinking about the consequences other than their leaders told them their country needed them.

Those in Camp #2 realize that their leaders are not worthy of blind followers and look to the Country before the leaders. They will be able to quickly discern those orders which are patently illegal and will question those that seem a bit off before they follow. They will also inspect their leaders to determine to the best of their ability whether those leaders are are in camp #1 or #2 and when questionable orders are received, will push back if they are not time-sensitive, or will follow those orders notifying their objections.

So the question is whether you will follow the leaders or follow the Constitution. One is a path to possible treason, the other is a path to patriotism. To return to duty in a lower pay grade would not only be unfair to the member, but unfair to the country. As most veterans do upon retirement/discharge, I have been developing myself as an individual since retirement. I entered an all-volunteer military. I performed my fair share of arduous duty and did my time and more to the best of my ability, I did what I was asked to do with no questions. To ask me to take a dive in rank/rate is truly unfair. I would return one pay grade lower, but under duress! I would still do my duty, but I don't think I could be as effective or as good a leader, as I could at my present pay grade or advanced pay grade because I would always feel cheated. Sounds cheesy but it's the truth!
