If I am buying, what Classic Single Malt Scotch Whiskey would you choose?

Currently, my choice is LAGAVULIN, aged 16 years. My next bottle is OBAN aged 14 years.

I only drink Jameson myself Sergeant Major, but those look nice too. As long as it is tall and neat I'll try it.

I have to say Oban! And FYI, Johnnie walker is a blend, not a single. But I assume that's just a generic scotch picture.... as I take a sip of my Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve :)

CSM Charles Hayden, even though it's a blend, I've always liked Usquaebach (Gaelic for the water of life). I've not had any for a long time, but it's still available.

All the cool kids know that The Glenlivet is the choice of every sophisticated aficionado. The 12 year old stuff, at $50 a bottle is extremely nice...the 18 year old manna @ $100 per is simply sublime. I splurge on the 18 once in a while, but my bar always has a bottle of the 12 in case company comes over and wants to have a cigar.

Oh, and always drink it neat. Only a Philistine would dare dilute this nectar of the gods with water or ice. If you are such a heathen - just drop and beat your face!

Tried to like Scotch like Tom Selleck in Blue Bloods. But just don't care for it. Much prefer Bourbon or Irish. But more power to you folks and your Scotch!

Out of those, Blue. Definately blue. But honestly, Costco sometimes has one that is fantastic for about $45 speeryside or something like that.

While this is most certainly a matter of individual taste . . . most people seem to like 10 - 20 year old MacCallan just fine . . . never had anyone turn down a glass . . . and while MacCallan is not terribly inexpensive . . . it will not break the bank. There are more exotic labels and far more costly vintages . . . but for my money and within my experience MacCallan seems to be a good compromise to make and keep everyone happy. The Macallan 10 Year Old Sherry Oak

A 10 year old from the Macallan matured in sherry casks. Macallan uses only Golden Promise barley, and actually use up 90% of the annual crop of Golden Promise in Scotland!

I've got to say I prefer the 10 y/o Lagavulin to the 16, the peat isn't as overpowering. It's just a bit pricier and harder to find though.

I like the Macallen 12 year myself, but I haven't had too many of them yet. I'm looking forward to trying a bit of Laphroaig in the near future.

I've tried most of the single malts available in the US and several that you can only get in the UK and Glenmorangie is hands down my favorite. A near perfect blending of Scottish distillation and American White Oak aging casks that once held bourbon.

NOT Laphroaig. I am not a fan of that, although it is kind of a "hazing" at a friends house before you can have any of the others, I am particularly infatuated with Macallan 10yr fine oak or the Balvenie Caribbean Cask are my 2 current favorites.

gin and tonic - the military drink - when the english were in india there was this new stuff called quinine that prevented malaria, and then treated it, if you got it anyway - so there were military formations where the sgt put this spoonful of stuff in a glass of water and you drank it down - and it tasted terrible - and then somebody said 'this would taste a lot better if we added gin'!

Okay the commercial is over - this is GOOD S**T. I found this a few years ago as I decided to try Single Malt and not just blends. After touring Scotland and discovering that each hotel, restaurant and even Airline had its own brand of Scotch, I wanted to know more. I had consumed copious quantities of Scotch since my early days in the Navy. Mostly Chivas Regal and Chivas Royal Salute (when i could afford it).

OKAY, Bottom line - $20.00 and not bad - it is not going to WOW! you but is good and it does the job as a Single Malt. Try it and if you hate it 0 you are out $20.00 if you like it - keep it around and enjoy it. If your friends are SingleMaltSnobs, just don't let them in on the secret. And save some money for a good 5 cent cigar (they are $10.00 now).
