If I apply for Post 9/11 GI bill benefits on VA.gov, do I have to use it right now?

I'm trying to check how much of the Post 9/11 GI Bill I have to use. I've never used it and I have some time on Title 32 and Title 10. I just want to get an accurate number of months I have accrued so far. I know I can just look at how many months of active service I have on my DD-214 but I've gotten different answers on which type of service qualifies for the Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Since the person asking the question doesn't seem 100% sure of what he/she qualifies for, I'd say the best place to start is by talking to the VA or visiting the ed center. If it turns out that he/she qualifies for the Post-9/11 GI Bill, then that's good for 15 years following separation from active duty.

SSG Carlos Madden - Yeah you do! Voc Rehab (Chapter 31) is also a great option for some as long as they qualify. It requires a disability rating of either 10 or 20%+ and a proven employment handicap (anything from a physical handicap to a lack of a degree). Chapter 31 is an employment benefit that sometimes includes education. Everyone's track through Voc Rehab is different. But if you qualify and get put on the education track, it's an awesome benefit that pays for 100% of tuition/fees, all required books, and some supplies. Can take about six months to set up, so vets shouldn't wait to look into it. And it's best to switch over to Voc Rehab while you still have some Post-9/11 GI Bill left.

I would recommend talking to a VA rep, or going to your education center.
I was tracking all AFS after 9/11 counts
