If I do ROTC and commission Active Duty, will my Time in Service continue from my Enlisted time in the National Guard?

I have been in the National Guard almost three years, and I plan on doing an SMP contract with the national guard, and was needing to know once I graduate and commission as an officer will my Time in Service from my enlisted years transfer over to my officer years on my pay or will they reset? Also I plan to compete for an active duty slot and will that complicate my time in service years?

There are two types of credit for service, credit for pay and credit for retirement. ROTC does not earn any credit in itself, but your membership in SMP will earn credit for pay since it is a reserve status. There is no enlisted or commissioned difference, it is all considered credit for pay.
If you are activated your retirement will be based off 20 years of active service. You can retire at 20 years, but your percentage will be based off your pay years.

MAJ Ron Peery Retirement age can be reduced if mobilized to active duty. Orders need to be 90+ days in length and maximum reduction (depending on circumstances) is age 50

LTC Eugene Chu - I beg to differ. I was deployed to Afghanistan from the Guard for just over a year. I still didn't receive retirement pay before age 60. And I had over 11 years of total active duty time. Or is there some piece of paper I should have filed?

MAJ Ron Peery - NDAA of 2008 lowered retirement age of Reserves and Guard based on mobilization time. When filing for retirement, DD 214 and orders dated after 2008 are required for age reduction.

Your time in service will count towards your pay but not for retirement. However, time served during initial entry and annual training does for retirement.
