If I previously washed out of an AFSC, would I be eligible to go back into that AFSC when my window opens?

Just out of curiosity, if I had previously washed out of an AFSC, would I be eligible to retrain back into that AFSC when my window opens?

Depends on the needs of the Air Force. If they have a critical manning need in that AFSC, they may re-accept you.

SrA Orr - I have not seen a washout/retain to old AFSC example like yours actually happen, but I'd like to hear from the community. There a lot of members here with some deep career experience that might've seen this happen. I agree with Col Private RallyPoint Member, it really comes down to the needs of the Air Force and how much your functional and leadership wants to work with you.

A few months back, I tried to get a thread going with members that might have some similar cross-training stories to share. SFC James Baber was kind enough to lend some past experience here.

Really curious to know how this works in each of the service branches.  What's the application process like? How long can it take? Would be great to hear a real success story or pitfalls to avoid along the way.

The short answer would be highly unlikely. It is a very rare occurrence, kind of like seeing Big Foot or the Lochness Monster. Once an Airman washes out unless the AF reaches critical manning shortfalls AND your current AFSC is wiling and able to let you go, then and only then with the approval of your current Commander can that re-application take place. But again, highly unlikely.

Yes you could. I was a case in point. You are eligible to retrain during your window into any field you want. Finding that desired field open would be the hardest thing.

Yes, we would also have to look at your DD214 to see what type of discharge you got as s result.

I agree depends on AF needs and if you are still in the AF or have been discharged. Several factors are at play. However, the best answer resides at the personnel office and your AFSC functional manager. Good luck.
