The Big Army will take that list into consideration and then send you where they need you. If you get On Post housing, then you probably will NOT receive BAH. If you end up living off base, then you will probably get BAH. If you’re able to keep your sane MOS, you’ll go straight to a duty location so you’ll be able to choose based upon which assignments are available at the time he/she checks the system. I wouldn’t recommend taking your family right away until you get to the location to find out whether or not your unit is currently deployed or scheduled for a deployment. It doesn’t make sense to move them if you have to deploy out to your unit within 2-4weeks after your arrival. Good luck to you. There are some places where living on base is preferred (Bliss, Lewis) and others it’s up to you. Super easy. Here was how it went down for me...

When you're at MEPS on the final day (you gotta reprocess and all your paperwork will get lost) the career counselor will call... I forget, Branch maybe? That doesn't sound right. Maybe it is. They call SOMEBODY from the Army and say "hey, I got a 19D here transitioning, where are the openings?"

That person then looks on their computer and tells the career counselor what stations have openings for your MOS and rank. Usually, they let you pick. At least they did for me. I had the option of Hood, Bliss, Riley, Lewis and Drum. I chose Drum because screw the heat and the rain. But, they made me pick right then and there. The Army doesn't wait on you.

Then, they print your orders to your duty station and then give you a report date right there after you pick, if they GIVE you the option to pick (Pray they don't send you to Korea - they almost pulled that on me). It's honestly a 10 minute ordeal that lasts about 3 hours.

But everyone's experience is different. I transitioned right after my Guard contract was up. That DD Form 368 is a totally different obstacle.

Hope it all works out for you! Don't let them send you to Korea!
