If you reenlist to leave, you can leave at 2 years on station. If you don't reenlist for it, you can leave at three years, but you will need to reenlist to take the assignment either way. You can drop an airborne school packet and be gone at 1 year on station, but again, you will have to extend your contract to give the Army 3 years of Airborne. Polk is not the premier training center that Benning is, but it certainly enjoys a rich history and currently houses some mighty fine units.
I was initiated into the Army as a PVt. at Ft. Polk in August of '69 and trained at Tiger Land (called Little Viet Nam at that time and Creighton Abrams was our post commander) until December of that year only to return in '72 as a Drill Sergeant. I returned once again in '77 as a training officer.
At the end of my first (short) tour, I couldn't have cared less if I ever stepped foot on that installation again.
It was much different to return as cadre and today, some of the best Army memories I have are of 'splinter city' in both North and South fort locations, and the march from cantonment to Peason Ridge via the tank trails on a hot and humid day. Why? Because of the legacy of that post, its reputation for being a rugged place to train and the many troopers I trained with and then trained who went off to various installations and combat areas and are still my comrades.
In short, give it a chance. Visit Lake Charles, Breau Bridge for the Crawfish festival and take in a football game at LSU on a Saturday afternoon. In time it will grow on you and may give you some of the best memories of your career. Good luck to you, Private and remember to "Bloom wherever the Army plants you" Response by LTC Wayne Brandon made Jun 27 at 2018 8:02 PM 2018-06-27T20:02:39-04:00 2018-06-27T20:02:39-04:00 Sgt Wayne Wood 3749037

Not up in how the Army handles such things... but upgrade.

Are you over-qualified to be a bullet-catcher? Depending on which Brigade you belong to (3/10 or JRTC Ops Group), you could talk to your leadership about doing a 4187 after a few years in the same unit. For example, maybe try and see if you can split your time between 3/10 and Geronimo. You might not be changing locations per say, but you’ll get to experience two very different units with very different missions which can help break up the day to day monotony over those three years. Take this opportunity to advance individually as a Soldier, there is an air assault MTT that comes through once a year, and it shouldn't be difficult to get to airborne or any other school you'd like.
