If I was to enter the Reserves and reclassify, would the AIT be held at the Reserve base or would I go to the actual school?

Hello all, so Im prior service and I was wondering a few things. I know every scenario is different but if I was to enter the reserves and reclass to something, would the AIT be held at the reserve base or would I go to the actual school and attend like I did 11C OSUT back when I was active? One more opinion, should I stick with the army reserves or try some other branch to switch it up? Any experiences you could share? Thanks a bunch

Reclassing in reserves and national guard they try to get you to a reserve school because it’s shorter so it costs less money. A 12 week active duty school usually is 4 weeks for reserves. They really condense the schools

To get the best answer you need to see a Reserve recruiter to see whats available and what you qualify for, from there you can make educated guesses on school times etc.

If you were an active duty 11C for three or four years I am sure a National Guard Infantry unit could use your experience and training. You are also more likely to get leadership opportunities and the schools for promotion in the Guard. Best of luck whatever your choice.

SPC Private RallyPoint Member Be kind to yourself and select a unit, NG or USAR in your local AO.

If you become active in whichever unit they will eat your time. Make it easy upon yourself.

AND: before signing, attend the unit’s drill weekend and see how they operate.

You will not be ABLE to change the unit’s modus operandi!

I heard some talk online here that if the soldiers been separated for more than 3 years, he has to go to basic training again! Is this true? I saw a story about a staff sergeant who came back in who had to go to basic training and yet he was helping the drill sergeants. I just got off work I'm tired but that's what I recall. More than likely the AIT would be condensed and held at the AT where possible. Otherwise it would be held at the unit over successive weekends or you would be slotted to the school. NG has a lot more options than AD.

I think it would depend on the MOS, the unit, most of the time you go to the same post as where said MOS is held but go thru the reserve course, same course just on a different schedule.

SPC Private RallyPoint Member I went Active 11B to Reserve 88M, and attended reclass at Fort Knox (as soon as the unit had the money to send me). While I hear there are some exceptions, most people who reclass go to school as opposed to getting MOSQed at the unit; and the reclass is generally shorter in duration than AIT for newbies. Probably depends on what MOS you want of course...but therein lies the key to your other question; the one about what you want to do and where you want to do it.

Another branch will probably offer different opportunities and experiences, and if they align with what you want, and if that variety is what you seek, give another branch some consideration. On the other hand, you know Army ways, so you may find that more comfortable, but trust me, the Reserves are almost as culturally different enough from an Army active duty combat arms unit as the Army itself is from another branch of the military. Same uniform, different mission, different mindset, so that might be nearly as much of a shock to your sensibilities as joining a different branch; it was for me, but I adjusted. But 1st you really have to identify what YOU want to do.

National Guard in Oregon is better than Army Reserve I have been told. My buddy went from NG got out for a bit then went AR and told me it sucked and they had no budget
