If my son has surgery for chronic sinusitis and after 2 years will he be able to enlist to USCG?

My son passed MEPS no issues. Two weeks later he went back to swear in and was asked if anything had change since his last visit. My son answered yes he had a doctors appt. MEPS requested all the medical records for the appointment which were provided to MEPS. The doctor diagnosed my son with Chronic Sinusitis and now he is disqualified from joining the CG. What can he do to be qualified to join? Should he have surgery and after 2 years will he be able to enlist? Very disappointing current outcome. Thank you for your time

Has he talked to a recruiter about this? That's the first place to start and who would have the most accurate information.

Currently, the medical standards for DQ for this case is as follows: Current chronic sinusitis, current nasal polyp or polypoid mass(es) or history of sinus surgery within the last two years, excluding antrachoanal polyp or sinus mucosal retention cyst.

If your son is going to get a second opinion, he will need to provide all of that documentation to recruiter and MEPS, if the doctor clears him. He may also need a waiver since one doc diagnosed and another doc cleared. If he gets the surgery, he will need to wait at least 24 months before trying again.

As stated the best place to check is the recruiting office. Generally, if a surgery corrects an issue and it is later evaluated to have corrected the problem one will be clear to join. The rejection is about having a pre-existing condition that the military should not be accountable for. Have him check with the recruiter.

Hello again, if surgery is performed does he wait 25+ month to try again? How about if he goes to a different doctor for a second opinion and is cleared. Would he be able to present the new diagnosis to his recruiter?

A second opinion will not likely clear this, once the military has an opinion they hold to it. As for 25 months I do not believe that is a thing. It would likely be tied to post surgery assessment and records evaluation by MEPS. Barbara Peraza
