RETIREMENT CALL OF DUTY SHARE/READ OF THE DAY

I was looking at my DD 214 Member Copy 1 and 4. It states in section 18 (remarks)," SUBJECT TO ACTIVE DUTY RECALL BY THE SECRETARY OF THE ARMY". I wonder why it says that. Need some insight RP nation. I guess that saying on the Army bumper sticker, "Retired but still serving is serving" is so true. Well for me I would put back on my uniform and grab my weapon and lead the charge.

I've found what I believe applies to this situation. It is AR601-10.
1–1. Purpose
This regulation prescribes policy and responsibilities for—
a.
Recalling retired Soldiers in time of a national emergency, mobilization, or war when declared by the President or
Congress, in the interest of national defense, or as otherwise authorized by law.
b.
Recalling retired Soldiers to fill active Army requirements in support of peacetime operations.
c.
Pre-assigning selected retired Soldiers.
d.
Peacetime management of retired Soldiers in preparation for their use

Chapters 2 & 3 outline the procedures and recall criteria. I hope this clarifies things.

I beleive that many of us would be jostling for position in the line to "recall to Active Duty" and it would be a long and distinguished line at that! Many of us also think that many aspects of leadership, discipline, and standards have demiinished since our retirement or discharge. I have thought and spoken aloud many a day here on Ft. Stewart as I interact with and observe some of the routines and actions (and lack of) Soldiers and leaders that I've seen and said lto myself, "Not on my watch and what has my Army come too!"

As I've sat and talked with many currently active duty Sr. NCOs from here(Ft. Stewart and with former Soldiers (generally over a few beers, cookouts, and BBQ) from my time as their 1SG and who are currently serving in those 1SG/CSM positions, say "We need to step back to the days where we were the E4/E5/E6s again and you were the 1SG, as leadership creditability is a lot to be desired. Soldiers have no idea of the discipline that is not enforeced these days. We treat them to much kids instead of adults and grown ass men and women!" Training is not determined at the unit level, but from Bn and Bde, without input from PSG/1SGs. Management from above. Senior Army Leadership trends are now to spend millions of dollars on repeated mandatory unit training; power point slid briefings, to address across the Army issues, instead of a good old kick in the ass that we used to get. As problems tend to escalate even with all this, one would think, they would eventually get it and take a step backward in order to move the Army forward. I mostly listen and let them get it out....and let them know, I damn sure agree with them.

Yet we all know, that when there are problems in the foxholes, and the water is knee deep, no one today will ask a Pvt or a Sgt how to keep the water out of it. Some Generall in the Pentagon, will turn to a Colonel, who will turn to a Lt. Col, who will turn to a Major...who isntead of calling back to where he came from, will come up with some colorful BS in PPT and the more colors the more the brass will like it and say ......this is good, we'll make it mandatory. In the mean time, Soldiers and Sergeants remain up to the ass in muddy foxholes because his unit leadership wasn't allowed to tell them to use a Soldier's first thought.... to provide overhead cover. This is the "way of the day" at this time!

The last 10 yrs of War has caused the Army to promote Soldiers entirely too fast and many are not prepared or experienced enough for the rank they have obtained. This is not the fault of the Soldiers/NCOs, as they step up to the new challenges and do their best for the most part....but you can't teach experiences they did not have the opportunity to grow and learn. But this happens during and after every major conflict of long term. So yes, I honestly see the advantage to the Army in calling some "retirees" back to active duty to fill some critical organization postions throughout the Army. But then this is just an old(er) retiree's mindset who would love the opportunity to do it ...one more time!

Of course, I would do it tommorrow if called!" Many of you would be right there next to me in that formation!

Shortly after 9/11 a recently retired (just finished terminal leave about a week before) MSgt from my unit was recalled.

In a separate case, a SMSgt from another unit I was in was recalled back to active duty while on terminal leave.

During Desert Shield/Storm some were called back! Also, knew several senior NCO's whose retirement were deferred to after DS!

Once retired, you are obligated till the age of 62, if I remember right!

I would double check with your Retirement Services Officer for the details.

But, from my understanding, Retired Enlisted Soldiers are subject to (involuntary) recall up to the maximum age limit of being in the service, which last I was tracking had been increased to 62 yrs old.

Retired Commissioned Officers are subject to (involuntary) recall indefinitely.

Its also my understanding that this involuntary recall is not to exceed 1 year in length (unless of course the needs of the service dictate it be longer).

I can answer that question to a point....
I was retired. I had 11 and a half years active duty with a tour in Vietnam in 1969-70. I retired around 1994 with about 22 years credit and at the rank of SFC. Then 9/11 happened. I was unable to do anything at the time due to situation I was in caring for my elderly father. In 2004 he passed away and shortly after that I visited my NG recruiter where my old unit was located. I was 55 at the time and the recruiter had a chuckle. He said if I passed the physical he would push my paperwork through. I passed with flying colors and good to his word, a month later I had been accepted and was back in uniform. I then set about looking for a unit going to Iraq. I finally found one. I telephoned the new commander of the unit and talked to him personally. A few weeks later I received a letter transferring me to his unit. Shortly after that we began forming (this was a new unit with all new people) and we started the processing in for active duty. When that was completed we combined our 2-week summer training with our pre-deployment training. After nearly 4 months of training, we got on a plane and headed for Iraq. That was in 2006 ... I turned 57 a few days after we started our training.

So yes I would serve, but I didn't need to be asked.

In a nutshell, see AR 601-10. You are a CAT I retiree if you are less than 60 years old and within 5-years of retirement. Cat II if you are less than 60 yeas old and over 5-years of retirement. CAT III if over 60 years of age. Retirees replace people so they can deploy overseas or fill civilian jobs. You can volunteer for overseas. If you have a critical MOS, all bets are off.

Davis Jr., MSM, DSL As an enlisted Soldier of the Regular Army who retires from active duty with at least 20 but fewer than 30 years service you automatically becomes a Soldier of the Army Reserve until you have 30 years of active and retired service. The Army also assigns you to the Retired Reserve. When you attain a combined total of 30 years service, you may remain in dual status (U.S. Army Retired and U.S. Army Reserve Retired), or request HRC-St. Louis to discharge you from the Army Reserve. Discharge from the Army Reserve in no way affects your retired pay or status on the U.S. Army Retired List.

According to Department of Defense (DOD) Directive 1352.1:
Involuntary Order to Active Duty. The Secretary of a Military Department may order any retired Regular member, retired Reserve member who has completed at least 20 years of active military service, or a member of the Fleet Reserve or Fleet Marine Corps Reserve to active duty without the member's consent at any time to perform duties deemed necessary in the interests of national defense in accordance with 10 U.S.C. 683 (reference (b)). This includes the authority to order a retired member who is subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) to active duty to facilitate the exercise of court-martial jurisdiction under Section 302(a) of reference (b). A retired member may not be involuntarily ordered to active duty solely for obtaining court-martial jurisdiction over the member.

There are also categories of retiree call up:

DODD 1352.1: Military retirees shall be ordered to active duty with full pay and allowances. Military retiree categories are defined as follows:

Category I: non-disability retirees under age 60 who have been retired fewer than 5 years.
Category II: non-disability retirees under age 60 who have been retired 5 years or more.
Category III: military retirees, including those retired for disability, other than Category I and II retirees.

I didn't get to retirement, but last time I checked, as an officer my military ID has an expiration date of indefinite. I actually checked into going back as a social worker recently, but unless I did it prior to the age of 42, I was too late. There are supposed to be age waivers, but they have not used them for a social worker. I lost 30 lbs to find this out. I'm happy to say that I'm in better shape now!

It says that because you are indefinite. I don't know this with great certainty, but I believe it is a way to avoid the draft. Besides, think of how much the Army has spent training you. Mix that with years of experience and the old fat guy is almost a better option than the drafted young noob.
I myself have seen this happen. In 2008 I was heading for Iraq again and was accompanied by a few attachments hitching a ride for other missions. One which was a 61yr. Old Col. who had been retired for 20 yrs. called back because he was a surgeon in his civilian life and served in the medical field most of his time in the Army (a major assest overseas).

It means that you can be returned to active duty during periods of war or national emergency for 10 years after you finished 20 years of active service. Don't think of it as a retirement....think of it as a retainer. The recall provision has always been a part of the system. It is intended to allow a rapid expansion of the armed forces in time a war, and is particularly aimed at returning experienced warriors to the military. Your assignments would be primarily in logistic support and training base in CONUS. At least, that is the way they explained it to me 30 some odd years ago.

Davis Jr., MSM, DSL My mother, Alana Gielczyk , has told a story of while she was with the Navy Reserves, there was a bigger than usual recall drill, in which people who had otherwise been discharged, but were still subject to that particular section, were recalled to see if they would actually show up. The way she tells it, most of the branches numbers were pretty low for that part of the drill, except the Marine Corps.

Because, if a Marine failed to report, the Marines sent a Jeep and another armed Marine to your house and said, "Get in the damn Jeep."

Because in my old-dog's opinion, I think our society has taken a turn for the worst and that the new generation of young Americans is weaker, softer, more indolent, more privileged, Oxford comma, and more self-entitled than any in history. There exists a thing called "emo" -- brothers, if that isn't soft then I don't know what is.

So what's going to happen is, after force drawdowns and spending trillions on piece of crap airplanes that don't work properly, there will be a need for grunts because at some point we're going to get in another knock-down drag-out fight and they're going to need to call out the old dinosaurs and the wily old sheepdogs to shepherd our younger generation of up and coming recruits. I was sexually harassed during the last of the 20-years I served, and a command investigation confirmed sexual harassment occurred. I had two military members participate in the harassment: one enlisted and one officer. At an Article 15 hearing, the enlisted member received a verbal reprimand -- that's it. The officer -- the XO of the ship I was serving on -- received what was then colloquially referred to as a "fische 5 entry."

I know too well how the military fails military victims of sexual harassment and sexual assault. For that reason alone I wouldn't want serve again.

But then again, I have a 100% VA disability rating, service connected, and it's unlikely for that reason alone that I'd be recalled.

That would depend. If you go out at 20 and still have time in the reserve component until you "actually" do retire at 30, one would not have a choice if a recall to active duty notice came. However, with the way the military is becoming, I would have to think twice. The odds are that I probably would go, but not without some serious consideration. I've been out now, almost as long as I was in, and am not happy with how things have changed.

Yes, I would get back in uniform...and so, I live in a National Guard State. This means that those in the power seat do not need any military retiree when they have hybrid (civilian/soldier)s on the ready for deployment.

My choice would be to serve...the reality is that I am not needed when the manpower pool is heavy and abundant.

If and when I go back in...by law, I can only serve 1 year, 2 years max and their is no promotion.

I would then ask the question...Would it be worth going back in to serve? Who benefits?

These are tough questions for both sides of the coin.

One of them was a 1SG who had just left his unit not 12 months prior. We were in Iraq at the same time. The second person was a Chaplain (Major) who had been retired for 3 years. I did learn something interesting from them: as a former retiree recalled to duty, the APFT would not be required. I guess that could be considered a perk...

First and foremost, the "retirement check" that is given is more like a retainer fee...subject to recall. Not likely they would call folks back until it is really bad....but I do have an awe inspiring experience. At Ft McCoy WI doing pre-deployment prep for Operation Desert Shield/Storm, a TAXI pulls up. OLD guy gets out (like 80's or 90's old), 2 canes to walk, stooped over....it is sub zero and snow/ice is EVERYWHERE.... He slowly makes his way from the taxi to your processing location. He steps up to the front desk, leans his canes against desk (we were all waiting for him to topple over at this moment)... reaches into a jacket pocket and pulls out his letter of recall to active service. He had a critical MOS. They promptly brought him to medical, declared not fit to deploy, served lunch, thanked for his service, and was respectfully brought home (NOT by taxi!!). ALWAYS left a mark on me. I can only hope to be 1/2 of what this gentleman was!!

Well I'm 55 this year so I can't hump a ruck as far or as fast as I used to and my eyes aren't as good as they used to be but I can still hit most things I'm shooting at= so yeah, I'd report for duty if they asked, I figure I'm good for at least 2 or 3 KIAs, possibly more if they give me a good rifle with some decent glass on top and a little distance between me and the enemy.

Davis Jr., MSM, DSL I know in a stop-loss situation, shortage of critical MOS's, and in cases where you have not completed your 8 years of military obligated service are the most common cases of being recalled. I am only aware of several instances of it actually happening. What happens if you get out and start a pot farm and start smoking pot? I am sure there are ways to get out of a recall, but why would you? Or could you? I would have a problem saying NO to being recalled by your country in a time of need.

There were special circumstances ... those drafted had never registered with the Selective Service because they enlisted before their eighteenth birthday and didn't know to register after discharge. I did not retire, so please take that into account when reading my response. It is my understanding that when you retire, you are transferred to the Retired Reserves and subject to recall based upon the needs of the military. This said, I would readily answer the call if for some reason I were recalled to active duty.

If a person accepts the benefits of retirement, they usually have to accept the responsibility they can be recalled (there may be exceptions, I'm unsure); it's part of the deal. If you don't want to worry about being recalled, then you can just decline the retirement benefits.

Seeing what you had highlighted caught my curiosity, I looked at my final PDRL (Permanently Disabled Retirement List) retirement DD-214 and it states that I have completed my obligatory time in service. When I joined in 1983 I was in the Reserves and then went active duty for about 10 years, this is where I fulfilled my obligation. I don't recall what any of my other DD-214's state, but I don't recall that statement being present.

I'm curious about what your obligation states in the block that shows your dates of service.

Although it doesn't state that I am subject to recall, I am, as are all retiree's, still subject to the UCMJ, and as such can be recalled to Active Duty at any time to be charged under the UCMJ.

There was an Active Duty retired Master Sergeant back in the Carolina's somewhere that was recalled to be Court Marshaled for the murder of his wife when the civilians couldn't get a conviction. I'm pretty sure that was the case... Talk about Double Jeopardy, how about triple jeopardy, if you add in a civil trial.

This is actually a difficult question for me right now. I'm still on Active Duty with four years left to retirement. I do like my job, but I'm beyond burned out right now. I have multiple stressors in my life and a continuation on Active Duty might not be an option. Once out, I don't think I can come back unless there's a full mobilization.

I retired from the National Guard after 22 years of service. I had made 1 deployment after 9-11, I came out of retirement and enlisted for 3 years in order to make a second deployment as a National Guardsman. I am 50 now, and still able to pass a PT test, I would if needed or asked.

"Subject to active duty recall" - that's the key phrase on our DD214 which we all signed. For us Navy folks, it is called the "Fleet Reserve".

I would say this; if a message went out with a notification about eminent recall to active duty, I would expect the Government would have to have each and every one of us submit data pertaining to our current social status i.e. current pay, head of household, health, etc. that would qualify or disqualify us from recall.

Not saying the Government wouldn't do this but I don't think they would recall someone to their retired rank and pay them what they are earning currently. For example; I retired as an E6 with 20 years in 2009. That pay was 1/3 of my current pay. That said, would I accept 1/3 of my current pay and leave my family to struggle? No.

Match my current pay (or at least market value) and then I would probably agree to the contract.

No, my choice is not based on greed or anti-patriotism. I served my 20 and there are many times I wish I could sail again. My choice is based on taking care of my family first.

It means, Top, that you and I and all of those who retired -- on the retired reserve list or one of those others -- that if we had a skill set and if a command needed us, we could be "recalled" to serve again. I'm looking forward to the opportunity but I'm not holding my breath for it to occur. I've read about and talked with some folks who had some skill and convinced a one star or a Colonel to bring them back on for a few months or maybe a year. But that's about it.

A COL in my AOC was recalled 3 times. He was a great leader and his presence was a definite boost within our small community. We were always sad to see him go, always happy to see him return ... but he definitely earned his final (final final) retirement.

However, out here on the economy, there is really no trust between employees or between employees and employers. I trust no one but myself. I retired a year and a half before 9/11. Absolutely! Unfortunately I could never pass the physical and I would be immediately rejected for multiple medical reasons. No, the administration has shown they are completely disloyal to anyone associated with military service. They just degraded the Active Duty pay raise, that has an exponential effect on future earnings, along with stripping out any real benefits the Comissary once held. No one treating military folks like that has any right to expect my time, efforts, or service are forthcoming.

As soldier, you take an OATH, to support and defend. If you served long enough to retire then you chose to reinforce your oath and commitment.......INDEFINATELY. I have only 7 years Active but I can certainly tell you....HELL YES. I would never part from my commitment to SERVE MY COUNTRY if I am not forced to.

I would do it, ass long as they give me a minute to get my fat, overweight, slack muscled body back in shape. When you are retired, you are subject to recall up to age 60 if I am correct, officers I believe can be recalled up to age 70. But I might be wrong on the age.
My wife sure would not be happy if I was recalled.

Like Police and Fire, for enlisted folks, the military is for the young folks 18 to 38. When I was in that age range, over 40 for PTs is high risk for heart attach, heat stroke and whatever under the sun ails the middle age to seniors. Soldier dies on a PT run, over 40. It happens. Also, retirees by law do not get promoted with compensation. they could be AJ d or frocked. Change USC Tiltle 10 for retiree promotions on active duty than maybe I would consider active duty.

I ve been out too long. So reality versus a dream or an idea may be the final appeal.

It would be rare for America to recall retired military to active duty. I can be done, however it is not mainstream. Enjoy your retirement. There are other ways and means inwhich one can serve America again. Open your mind.

It says that because being "Retired" doesn't mean you aren't in the military anymore, it just means you aren't serving in an Active capacity much like the IRR... It's called the Retired Reserve if I recall correctly.

If memory serves until you reach retirement age (@ 62) your retirement pay is not truly retirement pay. As was explained to me many many years ago, your retirement pay is in effect retainer pay as you are subject to recall to active duty and, at least in theory, legally required to keep yourself prepared to serve until you reach retirement age. While it is unlikely that you will be recalled, test recalls do occur on occasion, to test the system, as do by name recalls to active duty in certain fields.

I am not fully retied yet and won't be until October 2016. To be honest if I was requested to serve this nation in uniform in 2017 I would seriously consider it SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
Based on my physical condition we would need to be in WWIII before it would make sense to recall me.
Every day I submit my plans to the Lord and follow whatever He directs me to do or stop doing as best I can. While I would not relish the idea if God prompts me to support teh current administration in uniform I would, but only if He directs me to.
My talents have been required at the strategic and operational levels in last decade of my service. I had enough trouble working with and under political appointees who had their own agendas.
The current administration has supported nations and leaders that I would never want to be associated with including the Castro's in Cuba. Our national support for the Arab spring and to topple Bashar Assad in Syria were problematic to me.

Because you can be called back to Active Duty in times of National emergency. If one looks closely at the President George W. Bush's authorization post 9/11 attacks, he was authorized to call up the entire IRR, IMA and Retired Reserve. Will it happen? Probably not. Could it happen? For sure. I knew a Retired MSG during the first Gulf War that did come back to AD, but that was voluntary but one could be involuntarily called back.

If necessary... to assist my fellow Service members of all services, I would don my uniform & return to service and do what I could to defend both them and my Countrymen... like the Oath said... "against ALL ENEMIES both foreign and domestic"... trouble is I'm not sure at this point which ones are doing us the most damage, the foreign enemies or the domestic ones... the biggest problem is the domestic ones are hardest to identify... why... cuz they look like you me!

Yes, I have.
I voluntarily served as a retiree recall for several months immediately upon retirement.
Thousands of retirees served voluntary recall tours during OEF & OIF. It is a way to bring in experienced talent to meet increased demands, especially in areas like aviation and medicine that require a lot of specialized experience.
The fact that we can be involuntarily recalled during a national emergency makes military retirement unlike any other pension. Be sure to raise that point when people compare our retirement to a pension plan.

Technically we (Navy) can't refuse. Once you reach the 20 year mark we can transfer to the Fleet Reserve while collecting retirement pay. We understand that we can be recalled at anytime until the 30 year mark. When we reach the 30 year mark we are then transferred from the Fleet Reserve to the Retired List and receive a certificate from the BUPERS signed by the Admiral of BUPERS, or his equivalent. 30 years we cannot (I know never say never, in this case cannot) be recalled back to active service.

With that said, Hell Yeah I would go back. But I would need to lose a few pounds!!!!

Honestly, making the transition from Army to civilian was difficult to say the least, and I would rather not go thru that transition again. There are thousands of helicopter pilots and aviation officers who are younger than me, have more current experience than me, and are qualified in the UH-60 or the AH-64, and I am not. So, I would only willingly serve again knowing that I personally was needed, which I very much doubt would be the cased.

As I understand it, if you are retired, you are subject to recall pending the needs of the military. I was working with a retired master sergeant when 9/11 happened. He had orders back to 75th Rangers within a month. He had been retired for about 5 years.

If memory serves we were subject to recall for up to 10 years after retirement. I tried to get in 8 years after I retired but I had already had 2 stents placed in my heart. (Retired in Sep 93) But I would still go if they had something for me....

People I work with are always surprised when I mention this (guess you didn't read all of your DD214 did ya?). But I always felt this was a last recourse if we were recalling the retired troops. If our country was invaded or war was reaching the homeland... heck yeah, I wouldn't question it one bit. Beyond the immediate national defense need, I'd have to question the judgment of someone who wanted me back, disabilities and all... but I'd still try to contribute!

We received a briefing yesterday about the return of the Russians as a big threat, and the fact that there are relatively a very few trained intelligence analysts working the Russian problem. I don't think the Army wants to recall a 60+ year old Russian specialist, but I would go if asked.

Not sure if our flight doc in Iraq was recalled or not, but he was a COL in his 70's. Good guy. Honestly I feel that the National Guard in our respective states would be better suited to utilize us (retirees) initially if there was ever a recall. Hell, I can run an operations center and answer phones but my days of pushing cargo in the C-23 are over. I can shoot or operate an EST 2000 to train Soldiers. Two post-retirement surgeries and another pending, make me think my days of greatness are over and that mantle should be handed off to the next generation. I'd serve again but I know my limitations. Not sure they would want this crusty SGM back, especially since I have no PC filters or tolerance for slackers.

Shortly after I retired in July 2000, our nation was hit by 9-11. A few days later, I received a call from HQMC asking if I would consider returning to Active Duty. They were just conducting a survey to try and see how many they could bring on board if needed. I told them "Yes, if needed." That was then... and I was 40 years old.

Now, I'd still say "Yes" but I don't think they want 55 year old Captains running around with platoons. I could handle a staff job, but I'm no longer in the 300+ PFT shape I was in 20 years ago. A lot can change in a short amount of time.

Yes, if we were in it to win! That being said I am physically not able to do very much I can drive a vehicle still damn good shot with my rifles and pistols. I have adapted and have picked up some hobbies and when I need heavy work done or yard work I always have the Neighbor boys wanting to earn a few bucks. I am active in my community serving the Police dept now as a volunteer armorer taking care of all they M16's and Glock pistols so this keeps me busy.

I as recalled out of retirment from 2003-2005. I discovered that all military retirees are subject to involuntary recall up to age 60 and medical personnel up to age 70. You would be suprised how many retirees would jump at the opportunity to come back if offered.

Greetings SFC Davis- in my day and earlier- back in the 70s., that statement on your DD 214 was pretty much the same as the old " hip pocket " orders- some folks said they carried. If the crap hits the fan and retired folks like us are needed, well, you may get new orders to report in. This has happened in recent times and could happen again. When you consider that a mere 1% of our American brothers and sisters are currently brave enough to serve (except those who cannot serve for other reasons), then we must understand a force in numbers will be required. I'm sure many of us could not pass the physical today- like myself or a simple PT test- oh well. God bless you my brother! HOOAH!

I would not do it again, the leadership in my entire brigade was so screwed up and viewed all of the lower enlisted as mere pawns and definitely treated them as such. I would rather do time in prison than be subjected to that kind of sub-human treatment and disrespect again.

It says that because our "retirement" isn't a pension but a "retainer." As a retiree, you are still technically in the Army, just no longer on the active rolls. Think of it as a permanent reserve status. As an officer, I still hold my commission and am still able to carry out some of the functions of the office (i.e. administering the Oath). It truly is decreased pay for decreased services.

I Retired from the Mi. ARNG after 12 Years Active Duty and 10 Years Mi. and Ca. ARNG. in Oct. 1998.
In 2005 I received a call from my Wife at work. A Major from DA USAR St. Louis would be calling me at work in a minute. He did call me and was being Recalled from Retirement to Active Duty. I was sent to Ft. Jackson for a Physical and Re-Greening. The look on those Trainees faces when these old guys walked into CIF there were 2 SFC's, 1 Cpt. and 1 LTC all Recalls. we were in blue jeans we moved to the front of the line. Drill Sgt.'s said nothing but nodded to us as we walked through. When we came out the other end we told the LTC to lead the way. The Drill Sgt's now were yelling at these Pvt's to jump to Attention when Officers and Sr. NCO's walked by. I know this was a long story but when a Retiree Recall you come back at your old Rank you are not Eligible for Promotion except possibly a Battle Field Promotion we were all informed we would Not be going to where the action was. If you serve for 2 Years your Retired Pay gets Moved to the Date of your New Retirement Date.
You Do Not Do PT TESTS. You Do Not Get and OER, NCOER. You are Not Eligible for Promotion.
I served from 2006-2010 and I personally enjoyed the whole time I was on Active Duty as a Retiree Recall.

It normally happens because of the reputation for some particular capability, talent or experience you demonstrated while on active duty. That peculiar talent can be identified by someone who served with you, knows your reputation or by a review of records. Then you get a phone call and it starts out with "we would like to see if you are available to ...." followed by other advantages you will gain. If you hesitate, they can talk about legalities. Of course, if the stuff hits the fan DOD will publish ads saying what they need, and if it gets really desperate, you'll just get a set of orders, but there will be plenty of newspaper articles to warn you

I'm sure there'd be some age restriction, but if I could pass the physical, and I know I could, then I'm sure there is some position I could fill to relieve younger airmen to do more challaging tasks. I did a Retiree ReCall 2006-2010 took a little getting used to as I was in 1974-1998 Army. Not Eligible for Promotion, No PT Tests, No NCOER and for You Officers No OER. Got a Complete Re-Greening for you Newbys I guess it would be Re-Blueing! I went to Ft. Jackson Trainees and Drill Sgt's had No idea who or what we were there was myself another E-7 and Cpt and an LTC. When we walked out in Uniforms you should have seen those Pvt's Jump! LOL! Oh Yes, we also moved to the front of the Line and try this on how does this fit No try this on so on and so forth. Went to A.P.G., Md. was a very good experience. I heard other guys who hated it that went to other assignments.
Would I do it again? YES!

I am a Vietnam Veteran, I separated in 1987 from an AGR TOUR. In 1991 I was called up for Iraq. I brought up the fact that I had been awaiting a MEDBOARD since 1987. I also sent them a copy of my VA rating of 40% (at that time) since the VA and the Army are supposedly using the same criteria. I wound up retired retroactive to 1987. Good thing I wasn't killed in Iraq

If memory serves...in general all military retirees (unless otherwise disqualified), are subject to recall for active duty until age 62. Retired pay is a bit of a misnomer, as it is really a from of retainer pay.

If called up, yes I would serve. I volunteered for recall more than once after 9/11, however, the Army was not interested at the time.

Yes, and I did. I retired as a SFC back in early 1994. I had about 22 years invested. 11 1/2 on active duty in the Marines and the rest as reserve duty with the Army National Guard. After 9/11, I wanted to go back into the Guard, but I was caring for my father (Retired Navy/Air Force). He passed away in 2004 and I immediately went to the recruiter. I was 55 at the time, but after he chuckled he said if I could pass the physical, he would get me back in. I did pass the physical, and later the PT Test. He got me back in as a SGT and set about to find a unit going over to the Middle East. It took a while, but I found a unit being formed from scratch to perform Gun Truck Security duty. I talked to the commander and approved my transfer. I joined up the unit and we began training. We spend an entire year at Camp Taji, Iraq. When I returned, I was looking for another unit but failed to find one in time. I retired once again in 2008 at age 59. If not for the age limit of 60, I would have stayed until I found a unit.

I retired in 1992 volunteered in the 2000, got a thank you from President Bush to go with the one from President Nixon. the regulation states till you are 65 you are subject to recall. The Navy had to recall WWII vet when they sent the battleships out, no one knew how to run the 16" guns anymore. so you never know. your retirement ID dose state indefinite on it.

Nope. I requested to stay with my unit to meet a need since I was already in the AO with my unit. My request was denied due to HYT, (even though I was already extended 22 months beyond HYT to deploy with my unit to meet that same need), and was sent back stateside to retire.

I've been retired for 6yrs now and if I got recall orders, I'd report gladly. But, I would have two question. "How does this recall effect my pension I am collecting and where would I be at on the promotion list?"

But, I have no doubt during the physical for enlistment and the Army finds out the VA has me at 40% disability. They will say "Thank you but, no thank you" and send me back home.

Well since my DD214 says subject to recall I guess I'd have to. Also I don't think you have a choice in weather you serve or not if officially recalled.
Heaven forbid the nation is ever in a state that they would have to recall old broken Soldiers like me. I think by the time that happened we'd all probably be shooting at the enemy from the mountain tops already; heavily exercising our 2nd amendment rites.

Yes, although I am NOT nearly as fit as I was 24 years ago when I retired. Actually it would be quite flattering if I were asked to return, but I would NOT go back to active service where my old age would threaten the lives of our current soldiers. I'd have to be in a staff position, not slowing down any of the operators. I think I could contribute, but not in a kinetic job.

In 1991 I talked to a 1stSgt that was called back in for the Iraq war. He was intel and informed me what can happen to the enemy in the feild against us. He was with us to get his live fire checked off. He was very calm and very confident.
About a month later, I started feeling sorry for the enemy. Their air cover was gone and their Divisions were going different places rather than acting as one. I knew that guy was putting some s*** in the Sunni comm. Good for us. Bad for them.

Yes, if you are deemed officially important to the Secretary of the Army to recall you. Just because you’re retired doesn’t matter unless you’re on the Retired List after 30 years of faithful services and over age 62. Social Security age for drawing benefits. I would love to have the Marine Corps call me back but then again I know that they won’t because of my disabilities.

When I retired from the Navy with 21 yrs I was put into Fleet Reserve Status until 30 yrs(21 active and 9 Fleet reserve) was complete and then received my final paperwork. As a Fleet reserve status retiree I was subject to recall. Only way they would use an old fart like me would be if they pulled out an old mothballed ship and needed someone to teach the new sailors how to operate the equipment. and yes I would serve.

I had been retired from the Reserves for 16 years. It was time for me to put in for my Reserve Retirement at age 60. They sent me a pay chart for E-8's that started at 26 years in Service. I had about 22 years, but I thought, "No big deal, I can roughly figure my check". Then I got my Official Retirement Papers, and it said, "Master Sergeant with 38 years in Service". My wife saw it and said, "You've got to get that corrected. They're going to overpay you".

I stopped and said, "Oh shoot. There is a regulation that states that if you do not put in for Discharge, you are kept in the Retired Reserve". She got madder than snot, and said, "You big douche. We've had three wars since you got out." I just sheepishly laughed (I wouldn't minded getting "The Call").

Now at my age and carrying 60 extra pounds, I would doubt that they would have let me play in the woods with the "kids", but being Special Forces and Drill Sergeant Qualified, it wouldn't have surprised me if I had gotten put someplace running a Reception Center.

I had been the only Chemical Officer (74A) (with a Nuclear Weapons (Functional Area 52) Secondary) on the training side of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). I was then sent to Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN to take the System Automation Officer Course (Functional Area 53). After taking (and Passing) a modified Army Physical Fitness Test at the end of the course the Medic realized I had blown out my arches on the 2 1/2 mile walk; the process began whereby I was given a medical discharge at 10% by the Army in October 1988 (after a combined enlisted and commissioned 14 years of service). It should have been at least 60% (the VA gave me 130%, down to 70% using VA Math). We all know what happened two years later. At the time, there was a weird regulation that as long as your medical discharge was less than 30%, you could join the National Guard. I started to go back in and my wife at the time said that if I did, she would shoot me in the leg to keep me from going overseas. She was psychotic enough to do it. I still kick myself sometimes when I think I should have gone back in. Honestly, if the Army thought they could use this 63-year-old, twice widowed, former Captain, with a VA rated 0100% disability, I would go back in in a heartbeat.

When I retired in 85, I was issued what we call Hip Pocket Orders and kept them in my wallet. They were good until I turned 65. If a national emergency by declared then we were to mobilize and report to Fort Dix, NJ. Not sure if they are still issued.

I'd need some up-training on all the new electronics, etc. I'd' hate to think that we were bad off enough that I'd be recalled! A while back I was chatting with someone in Armor Branch at APERCEN regarding some other matters and asked what the recall status was. He told me that I'd been reclassified "4 - I". I asked what the heck "4 - I" meant? I know what "4 - F" used to mean! He said: "When the enemy reaches 4th and I Street in Washington, we'll call you!" Sounds about right!

Sure, so long as I didn't have to take PT tests. I was one of those odd balls that abhorred actual PT and the APFT. I loved it when we did sports activities and similar things though so it's not that I was opposed to physical activity, just the daily dozen and runs to nowhere.

Not so sure. Only if I could have a say in picking my unit members. I am an old combat Recon guy. Not sure I could trust my life to many of the kids I see here whining about sleep, food, PT, time off, school, and think the Army is just a 9 - 5 "job". It exists to protect the country and it's interests and it's allies. Many times that meabs blowing shit up and killing people, and we do that better than anyone. Go back in? If I could serve with guys that know their way around their weapons, can navigate at night, can use a knife well, and understand combat priorities, maybe I would.

The United States has the largest armed forces in the world if you count everyone of adult age who owns a firearm, which is the primary reason Japan did not attempt an invasion outside of the Aleutian Islands. That being said, if I were recalled (at 65 now) I would not hesitate to serve in what ever capacity the Commander in Chief would have me do. I took the oath in 1972 and have kept it ever since and will do so until I assume ambient temperature.

It would really depend on what the recall was for and why it was. I actually was contacted two and a half years after retiring about being recalled on a six month order to work on a project related to something I had a past connection to when still in the military. The reason for the recall was not a sound one and also it being only a six month order I responded no and that I was not interested and that the reason for the recall was not really going to develop like they thought it might or wanted anyways. It turned out I was right and they were wrong and all they would have accomplished was disrupting my life for six months at the taxpayers expense. If on the other hand they wanted to recall me for some significant event and a bonafide need in relation to that then yes of course I would answer the call.

It should be noted that a recall must be endorsed by the secretary of the service for an individual if they have not reached the age of 60. If the individual is 60-65 then that recall must be endorsed by the Secretary of Defense, and if the individual is over 65 but below 70 then it has to be endorsed by POTUS.

If they recalled me and made stiff enough threats, I'd show up baked out of my mind and probably tripping on some sort of psychedelic, otherwise not a snowball's chance in hell. I did 5 deployments with no appreciable progress in Afghanistan or Iraq. I have no reason to believe that recalling me would lead to any great accomplishment or anything resembling "victory" in either of those theaters. I've got better things to do than have my time wasted by incompetent commanders and illiterate senior leaders.

Those that I have served with also say that they would return to service if called. I think most of us would. The problem is could the military handle us. Now since I was med boarded and med retarded, Not my choice I wanted to carried out in uniform.
so I would jump on that, I still can work in the med field. Just be cause I can not hump a ruck does not mean people like myself can not free up others on FOBs I am good at a lot of things that the ARMY can use me for. I still hit every thing I shot at. I still a one good arm to throw a grenade if I need to.
I pisses me off that with all the people that can not stand being in the service any more.
That have jobs that people like myself could do, And would be happy to do.
So big fucking shit I am classified as non deployable. I knew one guy that could not do any P.T. or anything physical, But he was allowed to stay in for his last fifteen years being sent to one Hospital to another. Germany to Japan not Korea then back to germany.
He is not the only one so why could not the rest of us that wanted to stay in be able to do that.

I personally think the Military as a whole is doing things wrong by sending young men into battle! Now don't get me wrong I do believe that people need their keisters kicked occasionally.
I believe that sending a youngest, who hasn't had a chance to have a real-life yet is wrong.
Instead, send us old-timers who have led a full and life.
1. We are mad at everything and ready to open a can of whoop a$$ on anyone.

I retired in '87 at 20 years active duty. In 2005 I was recalled to AD and commanded a small unit in CONU that was supporting our deployed forces. I retired again only yo be called up again to deploy to Afghanistan to served 6 months wit the 82d Abn and another 6 months with the 101st Abn. I retired again but got a call from the 3d IBCT, 10th Mtn. They aske if I'd care to deploy with them back to Afghanistan for another year. I said YES. A while after retiring again from my year with the 10th Mountain, I got a call from them, again asking if I'd want to deploy again to Afg with the 3d IBCT, 10th Mtn. I said YES, but sadly, DA decided I had already done enough. Darn!!!!! I really liked the 10th Mtn Div. Yes... retirees can and are being recalled. I met several other recalled retirees while overseas.

Well, I know that applies for Officers, you are eligible for recall for the rest of your life, but enlisted I don't know. Now I'm not retired from the military, but I am retired, and If the Air Force showed up at my door and presented me with paperwork recalling me to Active duty in my former AFSC even if it is to only free up another Airman that was needed in time of war, I'd go in a heartbeat. I may be almost 67 years old, but I still love my country and will defend it to my last breath.

I don't have a wishy-washy qualifying answer... It's pretty cut and dry... If you have a "regular" commission, you serve at the pleasure of the Secretary of your service... to 65 and beyond if called...

I tried to come back on active duty as an ALO in the Guard only to be told I was too old (I was 52 at the time) and had been retired for too long... It was a crushing humiliation!

If recalled I would go back on active duty in a single heart beat because it is my sworn oath to defend this country until properly relieved. When such a recall is effected, it is in a time when manpower is in high demand and the Secretary has seen fit to have Manpower to recall certain MOS's and officers to augment the administrative force. In most cases a recall would affect those who have been retired less that 10 years from active duty. If they needed a 66 year old medical specialist or administrative officer I would be the first to go.

I’m there! A couple of provisions
1. My days of charging up a mountain with a 130lbs pack to sit there for four days without a resupply are done. I’ll decide what I need in my ruck and higher will send that bird with MREs, water and batteries as quickly as they seem to drop the ammo I didn’t request. Or they’ll have me manage the resupply detail in BAF.

2. I am not putting my filter back on. A dumbass is a dumbass regardless of rank. If you can’t handle me pointing out “work harder not smarter” is bad thing, then you won’t be able to handle incoming enemy fire, angry civilians throwing vegetables and all the other surprises that combat has to offer.
3. My training plan is not going to be disrupted by your stupid grass cutting, rock painting, drain shining or other detail. There is a thing called red cycle. Soldiers need navigation, shooting and combat training not area maintenance classes.

There are three categories for recall of retired personnel.

Category I: Non-disabled military retirees under the age of 60 who have been retired less than five years.
Category II: Non-disabled military retirees under the age of 60 who have been retired five years or more.
Category III: Military retirees age 60 or older and those retired for disability.

At one time, the regs stated that enlisted retirees were liable to recall up to age 55. Commissioned officers were fair game up to age 60. Warrant officers shared the honor of being liable to recall up to age 65 with officers of general grade.

If they feel it's necessary to call me out of retirement to serve, then BIG ARMY forcing me into retirement and taking my choices from me wasn't completely unnecessary...just like I told them! I would resist a retirement call of duty once I am retired in July and not because I do not want to serve but as a senior RN and paramedic I can really provide more to my community in the same role I do on active duty. I was also passed over for O5 and while taking care of COVID patients in the ICU I received a "get the fuck out letter" so I will take care of sick people where I am wanted.

I know two Vietnam vets, one Army Medic and one Navy corpsman who were recalled in 1990. Both were retired. One was called up to go to Madigan and the other to Balboa. They were recalled in a civilian capacity, along with others, to free up military medics and corpsmen to go in theater.

I gave a leg for returning to service after retirement. So, even if I could return, I wouldn’t do so. Why? Because the current administration is undeserving of my talents and it’s time for Generation Z to stand up. Though, in hindsight, few of them are able to be soldiers or Marines.

Are you in the Retried Reserves? Also, there is a maximum age at which point you are considered too old to serve. However, I forget the age... 60? I guess I am too old to remember. :) I remember where the Army recalled a doctor with special talents and the Soldier was over 60:

There is one form of duty one might consider, after retirement from Active and/or Reserve Duty. To begin, this duty is authorized under Title 10 of the US Code (USC Title 10).

According to Title 32 of the USC, each State of the Union is also authorized to form, maintain, and operate it's own military; this is the classic "State Militia." Many of the States of the Union that do this (there are about twenty) call this the State Guard. It is operated exclusively at the discretion of the State Governor, and functions to back up (or serves as the Reserve Component) to that State's National Guard.

Duty in the State Guard requires one day per month, plus enough "other time" to add up to 200 hours per year. It is typically unpaid; however some States offer a very small annual stipend for uniforms (a couple of hundred, or less, for the whole year.) Your benefit is to keep your military skills sharp and enjoy the continued comradery of your uniformed colleagues.

If the State declares an emergency, the State Guard can be called into Paid Duty. In California, this was done to fight the wildfires, and to assist in COVID healthcare operations.

At my age, I am not sure what I could do to help. However, if the conditions were bad enough my service was needed, I would not hesitate. I am not retired, but I did serve almost 8 years. There are very few, if any, of my fellow veterans who do not feel this way.

I served 79 days before being discharged with understanding I'd be able to reenlist at later time; wz devastated when informed I wz RE-4 & given its significance. Otherwise, I'd hv gladly returned to duty if recalled.

Wz 28 yrs before I learned I could unequivocally call myself a veteran, which only goes to show hw egregiously there had been a failure to communicate when I wz discharged. I went & registered at local V.A. & wz soon getting medical care there. Before long, I met a veteran who later became my husband.

Thru him, I met other veterans--both male & female--& enjoyed a comradery with fullterm & retired veterans I've found nowhere else. Thru them all, I've become convinced that I wz cheated of a choice. All those veterans have stated that if they were recalled, they'd report for duty in no time flat.

After 36 years - 21 Active, 15 Guard/Reserve, I'm pretty well broke, however I would give it a go if needed. They would have to guarantee that if I did something non-PC, that they would send me back to retirement status and not take it away. I don't have, nor will I make time to hold hands with every Pvt. who misses mommy, or tells me to F-Off. I knew it was time to retire when I was giving pre-range class, and I turned around and saw a PFC have a bead on me. There were no magazines, no ammo, etc. but I grabbed him, called him few names during my rant that today is NOT acceptable. I told him if he ever did it again I was going to beat his brains out and wouldn't even take the time to drag him outside. Well, yeah, I'm not going to go completely old school and punch then talk, but I will NOT take crap from these spoiled little turds, and I'm not going to check in with his feelings except the pain from my boot in his butt. So, yeah, that would kind of have to be the agreement, rather than NJP and prevent me from my retirement.

If the US Army chose to recall me to active duty at age 67-years old, 22-years after my retirement, and in a MOS that no longer exists, we probably are in a situation like WW II Germany where Volkssturm national militia was activated. But yes, if recalled, I'd report for my physical -- then they could decide if it is in their best interest to feed and cloth me once again.

I believe if you read further there are dates involved. Those dates are your inactive reserve dates.
In 1981, when I joined, enlistment was 6 years. Most common was 4 active with 2 inactive. 3x3 was an option as was a straight 6, which I did. When I got out in 1987, enlistment was 8 years.

I was medically retired in 1966, spent 11 months in military hospital, 7 months in VA hospital.3 years, traveling every other week checkups. Lost so many jobs because of my TBI. It took me 21years and 3 boards to finally get my 100%. But if I was ask to assist my country again, I would answer to the call without question.

Military retirees are different than civilian. A military retiree is a member of the "retired reserves" as such we are under obligation to report for duty if called upon. At around age 65 IIRC, and subject to whatever changes in the law over the last 20 plus years, retainer (retirement) pay will stop and Soc. Sec. take over. When that happens we are no longer required to RFD, although there was a navy chief who they asked, very politely I might add, to come back in the 1980s, he was into his 70s.

If they had to recall me to duty; it would be either as an Instructor (MTS) or similar secondary support role in logistics support vs front line duty. Basically a glorified Office Worker is the only work I would be doing. However, I do have the training for various Help Platforms used by the US Navy and Marines; so returning to duty would simply be a matter of refresher training to bring me up to speed after being out over 10 years to all the new bells and whistles on the platforms. Other than that they'd be wasting their time in having me serve in a front line role.

In a Minnesota Minute! I'm currently serving as a Team Lead of a team providing Life Support operations supporting an I CORPS CPX on the beautiful island of Guam. I'll only be doing it for 70 days, but every day I'm working to support our troops is another day of SERVICE. I've supported the US military both in / out of the AC/RC, both in and out of uniform, and in various contracting roles in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and now Guam, for over 50 years and I'm - frankly - very proud of being able to say that.
