If the Army recruited strictly off of Patriotism alone, how big of an Army do you think we would really have?

I had a VERY interesting conversation and it sparked some controversy but can we be real and honest...
If we were to survey the military and put out those that didn't join strictly off of their patriotism and Only joined for the benefits how big of an Army do u think we would REALLY have?
If recruiters didn't offer so many benefits , incentives etc, where would the Army be today?

Inasmuch as "patriotism" is a four-letter word in schools and colleges these days, I doubt you would find any/many to recruit. However, when you fight for your nation, you are likely to return a patriot even if you weren't before you enlisted.

I totally agree with you! I've served for 12 years now and although I didn't join for patriotic reasons I learned to love serving and the reason I served beyond my own selfish desires .

The only way to tell is when we really have a 4% unemployment rate, not the figment of imagination we have today. My patriotism grew over the years of my career, I joined when I was 18 because there was no jobs available for some with no work experience and things got hungry out there. Strange no one has responded so far except me.

SGT(P) (Join to see) - No sir required here, just a retired enlisted man. Good luck, if you decide to make it a career, Rajsheda.

I joined 83 my carrier path in college sucked, iran contra was going on and I wanted a new path a stricter path and the military had it, there was nothing about patriotism, I needed what the military gave me, discipline, my GPA college 2.0, my GPA military 3.65, and I continued this until I retired and continue this discipline into my civilian life, as an LPN I've worked in brain injury rehab, pediatrics, med/surg, icu, emergency rooms, when I retired from that I work as a material handler for 10 yrs and I bring the same army training discipline, attention to detail every day, because of my service I am who I am

Would we have an Army at all? People need to survive. I don't think people would join the Army if it did not compete well with civilian jobs. I

SSG Shavonde Chase - If they were to recruit purely by patriotism alone, there will be a small number of people that would "qualify."

MSG (Join to see) SSG Shavonde Chase We would still have an Army, and military in general, but it would be conscripted. Thank God for the patriots, and for those who are looking to better themselves and see the military route as a way to do it.
