Although it’s not a specific FM or reg, every soldier and service member at that should be able to perform the tasks in the skill level 1 book.

AR 670-1 or the equivalent for your branch. Many first impressions are formed off of appearance and you can tell a lot about a soldier based on their attention to their appearance.

I would say many regulations should be read through at least once. 350-1, 670-1, 600-9, 600-8-x, any regulation concerning your MOS such as the 195-x for MPs. They should be read through on a revolving basis.

Many Regs are 2 lbs of common sense packed tightly into a 50 lb bag. I don't think there is whole lot to be gained from reading a reg from front to back unless a specific question comes up. What I'd like to see is Marines reading appropriate level SOP's, FMFM's, FM's and TM's for their level and one level up.

Actually....that:s a thoughts provoking question...quite honestly, you might not think this possible, however, it's all online, I'd actually read Title 10 of the US Code, Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and the Manual for Courts Martial (MCM)...I realize that might be slightly evpccentric and arcanenib my part, also Title 38 and 38 CFR about the VA, I quite honestly think that should be reqd reading for all SVC personnel, so far as possible, honest...you want to get it striahgt from the horse's mouth, believe me, that's it, trust me, of be most eager to kmowmyour thoughts...understand, I'm not an attorney, I never was, I'm total perm disabled, as I've said, however, those are the actual laws governing the svcs, to !e, they should be treated pretty much like the SVC equiv of holy writ, I realize that's my own arcane view, of course....

Read the charge of quarters (CQ/24 hours barracks duty) SOP or for Staff Duty SOP every time duty is assumed in the event information has changed and pay adherence to the strict visitors rules for the barracks and log all important information in the log.

Uniform and appearance is important not just because we're a professional fighting force but it gives the right impression when meeting new NCO's and Officers.

Awards because I spent a brief period in S-1 before going to my Legal unit and I learned that Soldiers are not aware of awards they should have for their E-5 board. Not saying people should be medal hunters but being in the military is a career and you should be tracking what you're supposed to have if you want to advance.
