Get rid of the ridiculous height and weight standards and update them for the current times, and change the friggin PT test. The Air Force and Navy get by just fine running a 1.5 mile test with headphones. I love running to music and that really pumps me up. No reason the Army and Marines can't go to that standard. I hate running and my knees are proof from all that ground pounding.

We need more line workers and less staff. We need more soldiers doing there MOS tasks whatever that is. Less CIV filling support roles and more support done by soldiers. Fewer Generals and field grad officers especially in staff jobs more joes look at the ratio that we had in WWII as a good ratio to keep. Basically we need more soldiers working and less making sure that work gets done.

We need to fix the promotion process. Soldiers should be based on actual performance not based on a broken point system. I've seen outstanding Soldiers in small MOS's that did not want to reclass get stuck as SGTs and RCP while subpar NCOs make SFC just because they happen to be in a bigger field like 92Y or 42A (just using those MOS for example)

The hardest PRT session I ever had--conducted by Master Fitness Trainers too!--wasn't half as vigorous as the weakest PT session I ever experienced. What's next, Hot Yoga?! Yeah, maybe(!) as they claim, it reduces injuries, but so does not getting off the couch! Doesn't mean it makes soldiers any healthier.

The biggest challenge I've seen in my time in uniform is when we start off, we are told to think outside the box, be innovative. First duty station and everyone there after it's shut up and color... don't make waves... follow the crowd. We need to reward thinking and innovation not stifle it. The Colonel or General isn't the only one with a brain, though yes they make the final decision.

This includes PC language, fitness standards, "wear and appearance", SHARP, promotion/recruiting/academy selection "goals" etc. If this means women make up 43% of the force, fine but if it means they are 1% of the force, that's fine too as long as the Army's effectiveness is maintained or improves.

There really isn't just one thing where the Army has failed at. However, for starters I would get rid of the stupid reflective belt. Here's an idea for the idiot that thought this idea would get him/her promoted the PT uniform already has reflective material on it. If you want to wear that stupid thing down range be my guest (it ill give your enemy a clearer sight picture). Did you not realize this or has your stupidity gotten the better of you (which is most likely the case).

The second thing that needs addressing is the now pathetic way Soldiers are trained. This starts in Basic and tends to follow a Soldier through their entire enlisted career. How about we go back to training to standard instead of time. Go back to what leadership training was meant to be; Primary Leadership Course (also known as PNCOC). What is this new crap warrior leadership training? Not everyone who serves is on the frontline so why call them warriors?

The third thing is Height and weight, yes there does need to be a standard but during my time as an MFT I had to put out some men who were overweight, but the sad thing is these men could out PT most of the men within the company. This kind of nonsense was a travesty because the Army lost some very fine and capable young men. The standard should reflect the new generation.

The fourth thing is, whatever assclown thought it would be a good idea for women to go to and compete in the Ranger School Training should just leave the Army to the big boys. Why degrade a time honored tradition such as Ranger School and Ranger Training? Really do you think a female can be in the field as long as a man can without any consequences? Try spending 79 days out in the field without a shower and tell me you can "hang with the guys". Yes the standards are lacking now-a-days which need to be raised once again to what they once were in the late 80's. No more of this PT test then run two miles and continue running until you reach the mark. It should be the way it was run in formation at the pace the RI sets.

Another thing that needs to be looked at is the allowance of society within our military community. Stop trying to pacify every liberal ideation and focus on the main mission of the Army. If officers do not know this mission then they need to find another career field such as door greeter at a local walmart. The mission of the Army is to safe guard the citizens of the nation not pander to the requests of those citizens. So keep the attitudes of society out. Our only boss is the Commander-in-Chief not Joe Snuffy the councilman, mayor or governor.

With so much more that needs fixing I'll stop now before I end up with an aneurysm.

Wow ! have things changed since basic training in 1967. I can remember DI's up your ass 24/7 helping you get mentally and physically fit. At the end of basic you were a better person or a washout. Force marches 5 miles full pack, running partway with your M14 over your head. Then a full set of PT before you could get into chow line everyday.
I may have a false impression but it sounds like things have gotten soft.

I think the biggest problem is actually with NCOER and OER. The vast majority of the time you never get those quarterly counselings that are required, the CSM always red pens the shit out of it, little you can do if you have a vindictive asshole write it. if you need a change of rater less than 6 months after your annual you're fucked because you won't have enough bullets to get a good rating. When I went to Korea I had a change of rater NCOER 4 months after my annual. I got a 1:1 and among the best on the annual and a 2:2 and fully capable on the change of rater.

I have two answers. One is a thing that needs to go away. The other is a system that needs a huge fix and overhaul.

PT belts need to go away. We all know it from the top to the bottom. Which bothers me even more about them. We all know that a PT belt isn't doing any good for safety during PT. Then we are wearing them in combat and other crazy places.

The system we need to have an overhaul on is the way we do assignments and sponsorship. I think assignments could be made better by creating some kind of a "job board". Something that shows open or soon to be open assignments. Where a Soldier could "apply" for the position. Let the leadership at the distant end look at a Soldiers record and decide who they want. An example of why I think this is needed is you have many Soldiers that would like to take on certain leadership roles and you have others that may what some staff time. But it seems like you also have some platoon sergeant who doesn't want to be there and some E7 in S3 dying to take over a platoon. Hand in hand with that would be sponsorship. It is definitely getting better in the 11 years I have been in the Army but I still think we could improve how it is handled. Some of the things a Soldier needs to do to in-process could be handled prior to arrival. i.e user account paperwork.

Make it difficult to quit during training, bring back remedial platoons in basic, to provide incentives to those who didn’t grow up in a culture of finishing what you started. Some of the best soldiers I knew came out of those platoons after a rocky start. I have a nephew who enlisted a few years ago and was home practically before getting through 3-4 weeks of training. You don’t make good soldiers without some discipline to harden them.

NCO's need the same educational opportunities as officers. It's a double standard. As an officer once you reach a certain rank your sent to all kinds of schools. Why should excellent outstanding other ranks not be allows to attend the War College as an example.

The BMI is such bullshit. I had a guy in my reserve battalion who was and engineer for UP Railroad and an amateur bodybuilder. When competition season is in his body fat was at best 7% and hung around 12% in the off season. At the time of his discharge from the Navy he was told his BMI was to high... Almost 30%, even though he had recently win an amateur contest and spend most of his off time getting ready for the next competition. So, my question is...How is someone who is very visibly physically fit get a failing grade on his BMI enough times to be not allowed to reenlist to serve our great Nation?

The promotion system is broke. Too many good Soldiers get passed over because they don’t have “enough points” irregardless of the fact they are more of an SME in their MOS, their section than the senior ranking. Or they do actually make board but can’t pin because overstrength for the next grade.

Second is the rating system. In 14 years TIS, 11 years TIG I’ve only had two, yes only two raters actually stay on point with quarterly counseling/ NCOER support form. Can’t count how many times I’ve had raters tell me to write up my own NCOER, send it to them for review and signature. Then I’m looked at like I committed the unpardonable sign when I inform them I have enough integrity to not write my own NCOER. They’re my rater, write it. The rater needs to also be in the rated Soldiers section as well. How’s a 42A going to rate a 91B from another section?

While I do see alot wrong with the Army, my personal opinion is A. "Add to but not take away." Dumbest shit I have ever seen. Almost every unit I have been in use that as a means to bend the rules to justify their own opinions. B. Stop treating soldiers who don't go to the tmc on a constant basis for sick call like shit. If a soldier has a profile, get off your high horse and accommodate it, or just shut up and move on. C. Fix the military medical stuff. SM is in constant pain and it is getting worse? Tylenol. Runny nose? Tylenol. Broken finger? Tylenol. My point is, actually go through trying to find what the problem is not just sweep them under the rug. D. Probably the number one thing I hate is customs and courtesies. If I address you as sir or sgt or can or whatever, I shouldn't have to say it again. If everyone is a leader then who the hell are we following? If you have a Soldier in a technical MOS who hates his job but tries to reenlist for 11B why would you tell him no? Why do we wear PT belts in a uniform that's already reflective? Why does our medical system focus on catching malingerers instead of treating patients? Why do we bend over backwards to keep dickbag NCOs and Officers but screw over the guys that are genuinely looking out for their Joes? The answer to all of this is toxic leaders. These guys made it ahead because "everyone is a leader and the responsibility will teach them a good lesson." You don't let that Soldier reclass because you worked hard to get here and he doesn't want to be a part of it, so you ride him out of the Army. We wear PT belts because this General wanted another OER bullet so he added something ridiculous. The medical system is a failure because treating patients doesn't give you the same high as fucking over a Joe. And we keep around shot leaders and drum out the good ones because the good ones are an existential threat to the bad ones. Fix the leadership issue. Go top-down and get rid of toxic leaders and start training and promoting the good ones and every problem we have will change.

As much as I love grabing my OCPs straight out of the dryer and simply brushing the dirt off of my boots; bring back "cardboard cutouts" and spit shined boots. I know that this seems like it means nothing, but I still remember the friendly competition that went along with it. The SELF PRIDE that we took in having in our uniforms when the BN CSM would grant the Soldier with the best uniform the day off. The friendly competition led to other competitions like who can do the most push ups or sit ups or who can run the fastest. It was the simple things that started our unit cohesion. It was never about "mandatory" fun day that honestly isn't fun at all when it's forced. But that's just my opinion as an old school NCO that seems to be dying out and fading away.

Quit letting them be little babies with a stress card. Fighting a war you can not hand the enemy a stress card. If they can’t handle the stress then they don’t need to be in. Train the staff to be able to see issues to help correct them or councel them. I went I. In the mid 80s and that was good strong stressful trying to see if you could handle yourself.

Fight careerism. Increase "matching funds" in retirement accounts and get rid of the pension all together. Then end up or out. Have retention boards along side promotion boards. Let people leave and come back as needed. Soldiers at all levels are consumed by concern for their promotions, retention, their retirement. Stop putting junior Soldiers in full time additional duties. The training room should be staffed by 42A's and the arms room by 91F's. We've all seen Soldiers get sucked into these positions with vague promises of receiving training in their MOS or movement to a KD slot upon completion of their time in either of the aforementioned positions, only to get extended because they are competent in a position that isn't relevant to their MOS.

When I was a soldier we would be in the motor pool for no reason or the company area just hanging out for hours. Why not let people take care of personal crap or get some other training going? As an E5 I tried to implement training but low and behold I couldn't without permission from the CO down. So I trained in the motor pool on vehicles, but even that became redundant after a week.

C'mon y'all...pt belts in hostile zones! Hello! That is the most stupidest thing I ever saw!
Or saluting in war zones! Just because it feeds some O's ego, I'd rather not be shot for it. There is a gym at Fort Bragg North Carolina dedicated specifically to two individuals doing that exact thing in a combat zone.

Stop attrition reduction tactics. Don’t make it easier. Don’t be nice about it. The fact is if someone can’t do it they are a failure let them own it. If the attrition rate is too high that doesn’t mean lower the standards. The worst case scenario is they find out they are a failure when they get their brothers killed.

Explain why it takes anO-9 to run the Officer Candidate Schools at West Point, Annapolis, and Colorado Springs, while the ROTC Commanders who graduate twice as many Officers range from O-6 to O-8 without the several subordinate flag staff involved.

Wearing of ACUs or the successor uniform looks like everyone just pulled their uniform out of a duffle bag!

What hapoened to the Military’s quest for attention to detail?

The current uniform and suede boots are really easy to care for. The appearance they provide positive proof! It is easy to use, pack and travel with!

I attended a ceremony for a MAJ’s promotion to LTC yesterday, Sunday, Sep 16, 2018. Wearing a jacket and a tie, I really expected to see Soldiers in real Army uniforms, not work/duty/war uniforms for the occassion. I could have worn Bermuda shorts and a T-shirt!

I have to agree, the "gender equality thing is a joke, as well as this time out/ safe place/ stress card BS. DISICPLINE !!! That is what basic is designed for, not for a pansy ass country club setting for kids to get away from their parents for awhile. As for the equality thing, I have to agree with MSG Quintero, equal is equal. Cut the hair, get rid of the jewelry, same standard on a PT test, and by God sign up for Selective Service.

Reorganize and restructure the Combat arm's units . Particularly the Infantry,Armor,and Amored Cavalry.all of these types of unit's need to implement a 5 Element structure, 3 manuever,1 reserve, 1 command. This structure followed all the way up to Army size will give our combat arm's much needed capabilities on the modern battlefield as well as future conflicts. Command element composed of leader, sniper,medic,commo, machine Gunner, manuever elements composed of leader, sniper, machine Gunner, grenadier,commo, reserve composed of ast sqd ldr, sniper, machine Gunner,commo, grenadier, sqd would become 25 when full, plt 125, company 625, battalion, 3,125 , brigade 15,625, division 78,125 and so on ...

They should get rid of how they do promotions....I see it everyday where you have someone over qualified for a position but may not be good at book questions or quick fire questions but can run circles around anyone in the room when it comes to doing their actual job. I feel like we should have an opportunity to prove our job skill in a promotion like a hands on competition vs. a board answering a question ...

The first thing that comes to mind is the cultural mindset that if a soldier maxes their PT test, that they are super troopers and should be promoted solely because of that ONE factor!!! I can't stand that line of thinking. Fitness is important, and should be. However, there are so many more factors to consider soldiers for promotions and leadership roles.
