If this report is true, do you think commanders and pilots would obey an order to attack an ally to defend a foe?

Let us remember, the U S Navy did not attack the Israeli jet fighters firing at the U.S. Liberty in 1967. I later met the former commander, CPT McGonagle Congressional Medal of Honor awarded for his steadfastness as his ship was attacked and 34 crew members were killed while 171 casualties were incurred. The ship was heavily damaged. Israel paid about 7 million to the crew members KIA and wounded. Israel later 'settled' their bill for damages to the Liberty for 6 million of the 17 million the U.S. claimed.
If we didn't attack when our SMs were under fire, why would we fire on aircraft in transit?

1LT Sandy Annala, As always, Nurse Sandy you have provided in-depth information about a situation most Americans are not aware of.

I went on Active Duty 10 Nov 1966 and was in ET"A" School along with a bunch of other ET and CT students on 8 June 1967. Needless to say the rumors were rampant that week and in the next few weeks. Everything from Egyptians had sunk Liberty to Israeli forces had captured her and butchered her crew.
Over the years, I have studied and researched USS Liberty, looking for answers, but never finding any. 1LT Sandy Annala the articles and links you provided gave as many answers as ever, thanks you Ma'm. We will never really know what happened to the flights that should have provided relief from the Torpedo Boats and stopped this unequal slaughter for sure, but I do believe that President Johnson had many reasons for not seeking reelection and this was another one of them.
I know that The Commander in Chief is responsible for orders to protect the country, but if he made a decision to NOT embarrass a foreign country that cost one American life, he was a traitor. He left a legacy for the current CiC to follow happily.

I have no doubt that the Israeli Forces knew that this was an American ship AND what she was doing in the area (what her capabilities really were - the CTR designation was a give away). Liberty WAS flying a US Flag at all times other than when she swapped out her torn and tattered colors for Holiday Colors.

Sgt Mark Ramos. And on a Biblical standpoint, God ensures Israel does not lose. So, we need to most definitely keep them as Allies.

The Israelis are people just like any other people, they have a right to be safe and secure and to defend themselves; that said, if they any country flies a warplane through airspace under our control with the intent of bombing another nation we are not at war with... they should expect to get shot down.

The Greatest Danger that our Government refuses to acknowledge. In a speech before a joint meeting of Congress Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the “greatest danger” to the world is “the marriage of militant Islam with nuclear weapons,” warning that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) may be an enemy to Iran, but they are both fighting for “the crown of militant Islam.”

I think an individual pilot could make that decision for themselves and I am sure most wouldn't fire on friendly forces.I am sure there would be a way that the order could be deemed unlawful.

I have a strong opinion that there would be some percentage of those who would see the orders as unlawful. I was curious how others on RP would see it.

We all know that service members are responsible to NOT follow unlawful orders however there have been times in our history where military troops have fired on American civilians Brushy Mountain is one that quickly comes to mind. I think there are a good percentage that would, unfortunately do so.
