If you are or were going to attend college, what would you want that college to do for their veterans?

I am a Student Senator at my community college and this has been my task. I am currently working with the college and our college foundation on purchasing and installing a memorial to honor fallen soldiers, airmen, Marines, and sailors. Next will be the installation of a Veteran's Lounge. I am looking to see what else can be done as I will also continue this on a full time job after graduation.

I think the best thing would be to treat veterans equally compared to non-veteran students. Treat us like adults who want to be there and want an education. As far as active duty veterans, I would say that I want the school to understand the sometimes difficult time crunches we get into, and to be willing to work around a hectic schedule. I am not saying give us a license to get away with not doing work, but just be flexible when it is needed. I do think we should all be held to the same academic grading standards though.

Scott Cody! This is a resurrection of sorts, but if you are still a student at that school have you made any headway? If not send me a message and I'll jump on board your ship. The questions that ALL students using veterans benefits should ask their school is, "Why should I come to your school? Other than certifying my education benefits what else can I get or do?" As a student using VA benefits you can go to just about school you want so they school need to work FOR YOU. Offer specific resume writing, veteran job fairs, robust VA workstudy program, local veteran scholarship, Student Veterans group, space of your own, etc... If anyone else is seeing this and cares to comment please think of this as well-> What else would you like to see at your school? you all can see who I work for, but rather than try to promote my school, I found greater success trying to promote veteran students. Just like when we were in the military, the success of your unit or squadron depends (mostly) on the person doing the work. Leadership may reap the glory, but we all know who did the work. I believe the students do the work and I work for them. It's too bad many other schools are not on board, yet somehow tout a "veteran friendly" status.
