I did some research and couldn’t find the answer in black and white. I am going to ask my J1 about this but figured I would ask the community first. Thanks ahead of time for any responses. If you are selected for promotion to E-8 and still want to retire at 20, is that possible without completing the 3-year promotion obligation?2019-12-01T18:36:35-05:00SFC Private RallyPoint Member5295963<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I believe there was or is a stipulation that allows you to retire but I would just retire at the rank of e7 with a retirement pay of my last 3 years. Technically you can pin on E-8, sign the 3-year commitment, and file papers for retirement the day after you hit 20. Retirement voids all commitments, extensions, etc. As long as you are not on a deployment or a remote tour, you can retire ANY time after 20 years. But you won't get the full pension for your new rank. High-3. Average your three last years annual salaries together.Response by MSgt Michael Smith made Dec 2 at 2019 8:46 AM2019-12-02T08:46:16-05:002019-12-02T08:46:16-05:00SGM Steve Wettstein5297863<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>You can pin MSG/1SG, but if you do not comlete the service obligation, and are allowed to retire, your retire paygrade will be E-7.Response by SGM Steve Wettstein made Dec 2 at 2019 9:50 AM2019-12-02T09:50:31-05:002019-12-02T09:50:31-05:00SFC Michael Hasbun5298019<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>If you want to retire as an E7, sure...Response by SFC Michael Hasbun made Dec 2 at 2019 10:31 AM2019-12-02T10:31:50-05:002019-12-02T10:31:50-05:00SGM Bill Frazer5299909<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Look you want the rank/money then you do the added time.
