Camp Grayling, Michigan. We never had the opportunity of being stationed near our family. That and its a great location in a beautiful state. Where better to prepare our troops for cold weather climates?

Remove: fortress Polk, LA...and Chaffee RFTA so no one gets any wild ideas about getting it back.
- Ft Hamilton NY. Self licking ice cream cone
- Ft Riley Kansas...need something to trade.
Add: get Heidelberg back from German neglect. It is nearly criminal that they close such a cool place.
- it would serve no purpose, but would love to see the Army reoccupy the Boston Harbor Islands. Good place for the boaties to practice and for to stay when I'm home. It could be a CONUS Diego Garcia. Maybe make it a Joint Base. Since we would give up Ft Polk, net gain zero.
- I'd move AAFES HQ to Picatinny Arsenal NJ to compel them to put a decent PX and shoppette on post. Since Ft Hamilton would be closed the retirees could shop at Picatinny. More of North Jersey would need to be annexed so people could train there too.
- since I closed Riley, we could forward deploy 1st ID someplace nice or station it on a coast where it could deploy faster.
- move all of 3ID to Savannah and use Stewart as Maneuver space only like Pinion Canyon.
- get Ft Devens back so that 10th Group could move back. They would also have maritime training area of Joint Base Boston Harbor: Peddocks, George's, Grape, Raccoon, and World's End maneuver areas for airborne, dive, maritime, and land combat operations

It is my opinion that since we are not an empire then close all of bases outside the U.S. and its territories. With the capability of Air Mobility Command and the vast Merchant Marine assets (and the USMC but don't tell them I said so) we as a nation should be a expeditionary only force. Think of the savings if all the US Army Europe, Japan, Korea, Italy were closed. Rotational tours such a REFORGER or Bright Star to get Cold War on this. If you get off work and go to family housing then your not a deployed asset, your a liability. As I write this I'm in a Starbucks in the middle of what used to be CIF at Fort Ord CA. This was the largest base that went through BRAC in the 90's.

Navy Base Christchurch NZ (recommission) would be my add. Unfortunately it wouldn't have a mission, hence will never happen. Anything Norfolk would be my delete although I understand why it's there. It just isn't sailor/family friendly.

I'm all for closing bases located outside of CONUS and our territories.
For adding a duty location: I say we repurpose a certain infamous installation in Nevada for our first USSFB (United States Space Force Base).

I would have like it if Lowry AFB,, CO had remained open, it was a great assignment. The base was a technical Training Center and the job for the Security Police where I worked was mostly Law Enforcement.. The base was great and so was the area, I loved Colorado and the Denver area.

I am not sure if it was closed, but King Salmon in Alaska was a great remote site. Spent a year there, one of the best years I had on active duty. Finished my AA degree with courses offered on base, fished, promoted, fished, worked part time and have some great stories of adventures we had there. Did I mention I got to do some really good fishing? You just had to be careful not to get trampled by the local moose herd.

Bring back Long Beach Naval Station and in particular Long Beach Naval Ship Yard. Not that I even have fond memories of being stationed there, but the ship yard was a vital piece of our ship maintenance infrastructure and it was nothing short of reckless to close it. I have no doubt that the decision not only has reduced readiness for our West Coast fleets but has actually cost the Navy many Billions of dollars.

OP Romeo along the east/west German Border near Bad Hersfeld. But only in the winter. Very isolated, it was a bitch doing foot patrols with snow literally up to your crotch. As a Sgt patrol leader it was hard to keep my squad on a horizontal line with me. I prefered to keep them on line, I guess I never learned to trust them behind me locked and loaded. They were jumpy kids no matter how I tried to placate them. Seems everyone didn't like point for some reason. But generally patrols were after midnight. That was the platoon leaders call. Mine is not to reason why.....

None . . . I gained valuable professional insights from every duty station I served at. I'm not saying they where all fun, but I always came away a better Marine . . . maintaining a "gung ho" attitude definitely helps!

I would remove my first duty assignment, Cannon AFB, New Mexico. Coming directly from the Bronx, NY, this assignment was definitely cultural shock. Cows. Slaughtering cows. Pick-up trucks with rifles mounted in sight. The Airmen of color there was very frustrated - this was the early 1980's . White teenagers dragging Main Street on the weekends. Who knows what else went on. I was not prepared for that. But, I persevered. I managed to get out of Cannon and go teach at Lowry AFB CO. Great assignment. Glad I survived.
