I updated this thread a bit to correct a few words.

However studies have found that a person whom works as a dishwasher getting a high salary pay is less happier then one whom is (passion for photography) working in that field is. Further it is also known that the one whom is working in the photography field is less attentive to there income as someone whom is a dishwasher.

I used those careers as samples only, but while no one really desires to be a dish washer (Change dishwasher for a job you don't like). The photographer (Change photographer for a job you have a deep passion for), is most likely to work for less pay if need to for the sake of doing what they enjoy most or what they are good at.

These studies done however are out dated and don't match todays present time condition, but many whom are doing what they enjoy are happier then those whom are doing work they really dislike.

Knowing this, if every one were doing what they enjoy would this change the military over all for the better?

Realistically, an 88m, truck driver, because that rolls over into other types of jobs outside the Armed Forces. Secondly, I would be a 13B, cannon remember, because I believe artillery represents our Country, and is amazing to see in person.

This is truly a hard question to answer but i do agree that Recruiter would be a hard MOS to be consistently successful in. Every job has its perks and its downfalls.

SGT Rooney, This is a very hard question to answer. Every MOS has its "hard" times. The key to a good answer would be to work in different jobs or positions for a while such as you have. I have worked for 22 years in th same job. Although the signal world has changed throughout the years, I have loved every year. Notice I didn't say every minute or day? The signal world in my opinion would be one of the most thankless jobs in the Army. It is never a priority unless someone's computer, phone or radio doesn't work. The hardness of any job could simply be the day given or the stress on that given day. I know from experience the infantry world, or MP world is some of the most physically demanding jobs. Then they also have thier down days. Everyone has an opinion; I'm Sure of that.

Recruiter does seem like it would be difficult but I think trying to transition civilians into Soldiers as a Drill Sergeant would be pretty painful. Granted they get the badge that keeps on giving.

I don't think there is a way to rate the different MOSs on a scale from easiest to hardest. Each job presents it's own different challenges. Each job has it's own rewards. I think it comes down to nothing more than the individual and how he/she reacts to the the tasks for a certain MOS.

SGT Roney, great question. I honestly don't know what is the hardest MOS since there are difficulities within each one. I've been a 92Y my whole career and it's had ups and downs.

A couple things I can point out and attest to with my MOS. First, it does tend to be a lonely and thankless job. Supply SGTs generally work alone or sometimes with one MAYBE two clerks. You also get many people who get disgruntled with supply, or have a negative perception of us. Yes, there are some bad supply personnel just as there are bad personnel in every MOS. Equally so, there are many good and great ones too. The biggest gripe I fight against is that supply thinks all of the "stuff" is theirs and they just can't part with it. I despise that because I know I am NOT like that at all. If my section (Supply Room or S4) is asked for something then I will do what I can to get it.

The second thing is kind of funny. When this type of subject comes up in discussions, I ask Soldiers if they'd like to switch jobs, if they'd like to do supply stuff. The majority of answers I get is "Heck no, I definitely don't want to do that. Too hard." or something to that effect.

The number 1 hardest MOS was the Russian language. ( I don't why, but the Russian language was perhaps not as easy as one may have thought. But that was then. )

The number 2 hardest MOS was Air Traffic Control. ( I know about this because I went to Ft. Rucker ATC School personally and graduated to be followed by my FAA certification. During my time we had no Warrants, and the first few hours upon entry your offered the honors to memorize a 50 mile radius map, 6 mis-approach plates verbatim. 8 hours later you will take an exam to reproduce every thing you saw. Every one starts with a 100, if you get 1 digit wrong or 1 letter wrong that is a minus 1. 70 is passing, you pass that you go to the next room, CTO "Control Tower Operator", here your hit hard with meteorology to the point you think your a weather man, then every thing needed according to the 7110.65 handbook. I can keep going but I will stop here. )

Today I don't know which is the hardest MOS, but ATC went warrant so you will find Warrant officers in that MOS. :) also with computers involved I guess many things changed as well.

One thing I will say is that during the Ragan administration when the Air Traffic Controllers went on strike and FIRED, it was the Army Air Traffic Controllers whom were picked to handle that job. So this should say something.

I do want to say that, 11B is not the easiest MOS because of the fact that chances of getting killed are up there, however one MOS I would never want to do is 92M Mortuary Affairs Specialist.

I dont think there is one. No MOS is the same at every duty station. Had you been in a different part of the country your recruiting may have been easier to you than your other MOSs. I think we can guess as a whole which seems harder, but in reality I know some 88M that have harder jobs at their current posting than 11Bs and vice versa.

Having said that my opinion is that 18X is probably the most strenuous "MOS" for initial enlistments especially with a Ranger kicker.

Haven't really had a hardest MOS (AFSC in my case), the jobs themselves were all pretty easy. There were hard days but overall I loved every thing I did in the military.

If I had to narrow one down it would be 1st Sergeant. I sat as the 1st Sergeant in a Logistics Readiness Squadron (i.e. Transportation/Supply) for a little over a year. It was the most difficult and by far the most rewarding 13 months of my entire 23 year career. I learned things about people I didn't want to know, dealt with the death of an Active Duty Airman, DUI's, Spousal/Child abuse, neglect, child births, promotions, deployed heroes etc. The entire gambit of emotions and challenges faced by us all daily. I loved every single minute of it and if the Air Force called me and said I could return to that duty today, I would jump at the chance and pack my bags.

I can only comment on what I have done. I have held 2 different jobs: 88M and 46Q. Physically, 88M is harder hands down. Mentally, 46Q makes me hate my life. Being a truck driver is hard on your body, but driving is easy. It's also one of the smaller parts of our job. One of the more challenging parts is driving for over 30 hours at a time. I don't care who you are, it sucks. For PAO, the amount of knowledge you have to have on hand is insane. Taking photos is child's play, understanding how to work your camera in manual is a different story. Everything we write has hours of research behind it. We are the SME when it comes to responding to the media. It is also challenging to learn the military writing system as opposed to APA and MLA.

I once sought to do a lateral move to another MOS and determined cooks and armorers as MOS's that put in time! These guys are up before anybody else and racks out after everybody else. They have to have the chow hall or armory ready before anybody is awake and they have to clean up after everybody or conduct accountability of serialized equipment after everything is turned in and people are secured for the evening.

I think it depends more on the individual than anything. But personally I would say either Military Police or Recruiter. Both very important jobs that most people wouldn't want to do. MP doesn't have the best hours and another MOS that is hard to get promoted in. Recruiter is more of an isolated job and you gotta be very ambitious in my opinion to succeed at it. But again, I've never done either one of them.

I originally wanted to go active component and infantry. The needs of the Army put me in the Reserves as an Engineer. I love it! I can drive to the location instead of hump it over and we blow hole through wall instead of kick down doors. Or we can do other Engineering operations besides the "sexy" route clearance missions and do construction like I am doing now. This can help Soldiers translate their MOS into a civilian career that is good paying when they get out.

I love being a Combat Engineer. It feels good knowing your job (route clearance) makes a difference, even if unseen. For example, clearing the route to make it safer for coalition and civilian travel. If I could reclass, I would like to go Police Dog Handler. It'd be something I believe I'd enjoy, and give me skills that can transfer to the civilian side should I choose to ETS (civilian goal would be to go to the Police Academy and join the Indianapolis Metro).

I originally wanted to come in as Infantryman, but my parents convinced me to enlist as a mechanic since I was already working as one. I do not regret my decision, as a matter of fact I have been fortunate to serve with combat arms units. In those units I learned a lot not just my MOS but more advanced soldier skills and tactics.

I love my job, but I was supposed to be a 15t (Blackhawk) rather than a 15r (apache).

The recruiter couldn't get me into the army for 4 months due to ait backlog (guess this is true, I have no way of knowing), so I picked apaches instead.

Only reason I may have picked differently was to be able to fly rather than crew from the ground.

I'm a 92Y Unit Supply Specialist. I believe the Quartermaster branch is one of the top branches to be in since logistics is essential to ANY and ALL operations, whether military or business. Working in the logistics field will put you above others once you get out and work in the civilian sector.

91A Ordnance Officer. Ordnance is probably one of the most versatile branches of the Logistics Corps in my opinion. As a 91A you work on both the maintenance and the ammunition sides of the house. It gives you the opportunity to work almost anywhere with almost any kind of unit. As a PL, I had an 80 Soldier maintenance platoon that supported a Paladin Field Artillery BN of over 300 Soldiers. We kept that BN moving, fueled, and full of ammo. As a CPT I got to command the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment of an Ordnance Battalion that ran 5 ammunition depots in Japan and Okinawa. I also got to be the SPO and manage ammo shipments throughout the Pacific AO for several months. We stored, maintained, demilitarized, and shipped everything from sonar bouys and black powder to Patriot missiles. After career course you become a 90A Multifunctional Logistician. Logistics is one of the best areas of the Army in my opinion. You can go almost anywhere and do almost anything because everyone needs logistical support of some kind to last more than a couple days. You have lots of options in that field and if you get a masters degree in logistics or supply chain management, you stand to make big money in the civilian sector once you retire.

You will get the most use out of one of the Logisitics branches likely, as well as a good salary and position upon exiting the military. Its likely one of the most applicable branches.

I personally think Signal is a great way to go because its also very applicable in the civilian world after service, but at the same time people hate you if they can't access their RallyPoint time.

As for aviation, I was disqualified (with 20/10 vision mind you) because I had a red/green vision deficiency. Be good to know what your limitations are before you get your hopes too high for something such as aviation.

I agree with what CPT Johnson said. Although I commissioned 25A, I'm currently the BN Maintenance Officer and I've learned how much maintenance and logistics effect the unit readiness. Additionally, like the CPT said, it is an easy avenue to acquire an excellent civilian job. Likewise, being a 25A allows you to grab IT Certs for free. As a 25A, as you continue to rank up, you are practically required to be certified (Net+, Sec+, etc) depending on your position/rank. In the civilian world, these certs would could cost several hundred dollars depending on the cert, but being in the military, you have the opportunity to receive a voucher and take these test for "free". I say free because You do not pay anything. So, the fact that you would be certified for several years (depending on how long you were in the military) you could easily land a well paid IT job in the civilian sector. With the continual growth of cyber warfare, you should have no problem finding a position in the military and civilian sector. Just an FYI, as a cyber security manager or something along those lines, you could easily earn six figures if you work for large corporations (anything from well-known banks, to popular websites, to federal corporations...etc...)

Engineer....if you are techincally minded.

Any of the three Logistics branches are amazing for the opportunities the present both in the military and outside of it.

Signal can be very lucrative as well.

No matter what you select, if you can earn your PMP certification and Six Sigma, you will always have some options available.

One other cool thing about the Ordnance Corps that you might want to consider is that they get the opportunity to try out for EOD if that is something you are interested in. From what I'm told the school is pretty intense, you can't be color blind (God forbid you cut the red wire instead of the blue wire!) or allergic to C4, but it is definitely rewarding. I have a few friends in EOD and they absolutely love it. If you work well under pressure, enjoy blowing things up and don't mind travel or unique assignments, you might like EOD. Just another thing that makes Ordnance the best branch in the Logistics Corps!

A gentleman that I have had the pleasure and honor of working with and for is a retired Green Beret. He was a tabbed Ranger E-6 when he went SF, an E-8 in Group when he commissioned, and an O-3E when he retired. He continues to work directly with SF and other Spec Ops. I expect to go to RASP in a few weeks, and I plan to go SF eventually, so I asked him what advice he wishes someone would have given him when he was at this stage in his career.

He advised me to do two or three years in Batt, get tabbed, then commission before going SF. He said that besides getting more pay, officers have better career opportunities.

Much as there are other jobs I would enjoy I would say if I had my ultimate say in what job/rank I was I would pick either an O3 or O4 flying something like the C5 or C17. I could also tolerate being an O5/O6 flying one of the VC25s. Basically any pilot position flying a heavy aircraft.

It's all good. Drink the koolaid and join the club......any club will do. No matter what you do, or where you do it, you are a 1%er.

That being said, the CAV has big hats, sabers, big egos, and spurs that jingle jangle jingle. We don't discriminate either. We love all branches of the service, all military jobs, and all ranks. But nothing good comes easy, or cheap, and your gold spurs are only earned through combat. Larger than life handlebar mustaches authorized on a case by case basis.....as long as only CAV folks are in the AOR. Air Cav! Out Front!.

Wow, I guess I'm the only "brown shoe" guy here. I am a Crew Chief and have been for 30 years as of last weekend. I started on F-14 Tomcats for 6 years, and then A-10 Warthogs for 16 years. I've been back in the
air-to-air community in F-15 Eagles for 8 years now. I have never had, and can't imagine a more intense tactical aviation career than a Warthog Crew Chief, although I'm pretty sure being a Zulu Crew Chief in the Marines or an Apache Longbow Crew Chief has to be pretty great to.

My honest answer is that I would chose different branches depending upon my military and future career goals.

Note, this is simply my opinion based on my experiences.

IF

You want the a likely guarantee of enlisted training (technical) that equals a job after military life, AF or NAVY

toughest prospects to find a job after military, jobs in combat arms for Army or Marines

If you want a plethora of duty stations where you really want to live, aka best bases nicest housing, Navy and AF

Best benefits and most extra pays, NAVY and AF

If you want to be a Piolet, AF or Navy

A Diver, Navy or Army

Best guarrentee of 20 years service, Navy and AF

Best uniforms, Navy or Marines

Most eligibility for certifications, degrees, ribbons and awards, AF

If you want to be a "combat vet" ie you want to have the greatest likihood of participating in a actual direct combat operations/battle, Army or Marines. Remember most SOCOM elements are Army (SF, Ranger, SOAR, CA, and consider what most SMUs are ...

On the other side, if you want the best chance of never being injured or killed down range or injured during high speed training, AF and Navy

If you want a career in state department, politics or CIA, Navy

NSA, AF

Other secret black box, door kicker shooter jobs, Army SOCOM then Navy (Dept of Marines)

My point being is that there is no one "best branch". I chose the Army and I am proud and satisfied with that decision even in recognition of ways that the Army is dysfunctional. It's my dysfunctional family and all of the other branches represent my crazy 1st cousins. The thinking that one branch is better is poisonous and honestly childish and diversive. No one branch of the Military could conduct sustained military operations on a large scale for any length of time without the other. They are all critical. As any combat soldier who has called for fire from the AF or Navy can testify, when it comes it's almost magical. We are strong because we are one united military. Hence the wisdom and need for ALL the branches of the United States Military.

Every male should go combat arms, so by off chance they go to a support unit, they will know how much combat soldiers suffer. I am partial to Armor or Tanks because they will lead the ground attack in relatively flat terrain. They weigh 70 tons, have a 1500 turbine engine, and a main gun that shoots a round a mile per second. Some units defeat, we destroy. Never forget the grunts and combat arms soldiers.

Without a doubt I would definitely pick the Marine Corps as my branch. We as Marines are just cut from a different cloth and I love it. My MOS on the other hand, I would try to be a scout sniper. The school house is very challenging and rewarding at the same time. There is just something about earning your job that makes you want to succeed in it.

I should have been a medic or an infantryman at least to start off to get more tactical experience. My first assignment was a strategic level analyst covering contingency operations around the world. I did well in that position, enough to have me recommended to SGT. With the recommendation, I was moved to another unit where the focus was more operational level intelligence, which requires different approaches and software systems. I am still playing catch with some high speed PFCs who have had a lot more experience at the tactical levels with deployments to Afghanistan, Africa, and Germany.

I am fascinated by cyber-defense jobs. If I had it to do over again, I would probably seek a career in that area. The military youth organizations, Sea Cadets and Civil Air Patrol have training and competition program in that area. They are working on promoting computers and STEM to these youth.

Ya know, that's a really interesting question...when I'd been Army ROTC, then USAF OTS, I'd had delusions of grandeur about being a flight surgeon doing bioengineering research...needless to say, I bollixed the whole thing up, it never happened, and I got bupkas for all my efforts...when I'd gone USAF OTS, a recruiter for it explicitly told me I was in the wrong office, to exit, stage left, and see the USAF Biomed Sci Corps (BSC) recruiter about the Bioenvironmental Engrs (BEEs) under BSC...needless to say, I was too stupid and inexperienced to know when I was being told the truth, which caused myself, my wife, my family, her family, our friends, and God, 44 yrs of unending heartache, misery, grief, upset, aggravation, and thwarted ambition...the correct USAF AFSC, analogous to Army MOS, had been 9124F...needless to say, I knew nothing about such "shredouts", namely the "F", as they were called...all I could hear was "bioenvironmental", which completely threw me off...had I listened back then, instead of being a complete, total, utter nincompoop twit, I "might've" actually managed to have had a halfway decent chance of getting the whole thing right, instead of so totally, abysmally wrong...obv, had I gotten it right, I might not be typing all this right now, certainly, as well..I mean, some of us just were genetically born to fall uphill, and/or never manage to grab the brass ring, quite clearly, ya know?

I would have picked the Air Force in any event but wish i hadn't passed up some opportunities I had along the way to become a commissioned officer. I did have Officers and NCOs in My unit that did try to get Me pursue that avenue but when you are younger sometimes You think You know more than You actually do. I would be a 33T/35T which I was for 22 years until I retired 2 years ago and the best rank was when I was a 1SG for 5 different companies and having the chance to take care of all the Soldiers and families and equipment and getting all the missions done

If I could’ve picked any MOS it would either be Tanker,although I’m about a half foot too tall, or Medic, since that’s a skill I could use outside the military, but for now I’ll just stick with 88M.
