It'd definitely be 3-6 (d), using electronic devices while walking. It's such a pain in the butt when I have to keep stopping to respond to someone's texts, when I could just walk/text at the same time. Invariably, the sender is requesting an update and wanting to know how long until I return, and there's no respectful way to say, "If you would stop texting me, I would've been there already." LOL

As much as I'm sure it'll be covered, I am heavily in favor of reverting the tattoo policy. Provided a service member's ink isn't wildly offensive, it being above or below the mark (knee, elbow, neckline) has absolutely no bearing on the professionalism of the individual. Some of the greatest leaders I've encountered, officer and enlisted, have had ink visible in the PFU.

Back to BDUs and Spit shined boots. In the Regiment it was referred to as "Spits and Starches". It is a very professional and clean look. I see too many folks in their wash and wears that look like they just came off a dirty floor. Taking time to look professional is always a good thing. If you think shining boots is a pain in the ass, don't ever join The Old Guard!

I would take out the new tattoo policy and add the use of earrings in ACU while in Garrison duties. It could be exactly as the regulation for earrings with ASU that specify size, diameter and shape. I know females are minority and anything regarding females it's always taken in a negative way. This is just me.

I hate the new VERY LIMITING policy on females' "medium" haircuts (it can have no more than one inch difference in length from front to back). Everyone I know with shorter hair wears it bobbed, longer in the front, shorter in the back. It is universally flattering, stays off the collar, and doesn't look like a crappy pageboy in front. We have no wiggle room now (for those of us who care about complying with the regulation). I understand that many females really pushed the limit with their hair and as a result we are all paying for it.

Everyone saying hands in pockets 'cause they're cold.... Get some gloves. The spirit of the reg is so you don't have joes standing around with hands in pockets or walking with hands in pockets.

I would like to see a change to the mustache section. As long as it is clean and you don't look like a hobo, I think the 'stache should be allowed to be shaped/size per individual. Smaller mouths make some "in regulation" mustaches look weird. No beards but I don't see the heartache that SGMs have for mustaches. Some people look rather sharp with 'em.

I'd do away with the hair policies. I think it's moronic to shave the heads of men for basic training, but the women can keep all theirs. Men must maintain short hair during their careers while women can have long hair. Why not hold men and women to the same standards when it comes to hair?

I have seen this a lot and it does not look very good in my eyes. For so many years, we were forbidden to wear fatigues except to and from work and making a short stop at a store. I will always think of combat uniforms as a work uniform and not one to wear when in the general public ie: shopping malls, eating establishments, etc. Oh well, it's probably good that I retired when I did.

Another vote for beards. As others have said , pro-masks will seal with a beard. As long as a length limit is place on it and it’s neatly shaped and trimmed, why not? No beards is a recent development. Other western armies are allowed beards and they still look professional.

Facial hair restrictions. It doesn't really affect gas mask seals with the newer mask designs, and it's just painful to see a cavalryman without a proper mustache. There is no way to wear a proper cavalry mustache and not be out of regulations with things as they are. Heck, if cavalry can't wear proper mustaches, (think handlebars) then we might as well call ourselves mounted infantry.

I have to say that the mustache regulation doesn't make a lot of sense. Forcing one to trim their mustache to the corner of their lips is essentially telling some of them to look like Hitler. I would allow the width of the mustache to follow the natural horizontal growth above their lip, but limit the vertical growth to a line parallel with the crease of their mouth. No goatee or fu Manchu growth, but there is nothing wrong with a full and well groomed mustache.

I would change so much, not just one! This is my Army-specific list since that's where I spent my time:

* Hands in pockets
* Boonie cap can be adopted at unit CDR discretion
* Neat, trimmed facial hair for males
* Females can have pony tails any time
* In garrison, jewelry, makeup, hair can be "whatev" (strict tactical in field)
* Black boots with dress uniform!
* All combat arms have branch-of-service cords like the blue infantry cord.
* Once you ear a combat arms cord (ie, infantry blue cord) it stays with you forever unless you muck something up and get your combat arms MOS revoked
annnnnd...
* Replace beret with Cav Stetson (okay, haha, just joking on that last one)

They will be worn one around the waist, 2 cross crossed over the shoulders, crossing at the middle of the chest and back, and one around the fourheaf 1/4" above the eyebrows, parallel with the ground.

I'm pretty much good with the reg the way it is, but along the lines of appearance, I feel AR 600-9 is to lenient on the body fat standards when it comes to the tape. It's not just an appearance issue with this, it is also a soldier health issue. An obese soldier presents with more health risk and long-term cost to the DoD healthcare system. Maybe allowing higher percentage of body fat in direct proportion with how well a soldier scores on the APFT would be good. Some dudes are just brick shithouses and weigh more and have different proportions because they are muscular, but they max the APFT.

Bring back the khaki (tan) uniform! Office personnel, recruiters, drill sergeants look much more professional when they are wearing a uniform appropriate for an office setting! Nothing worse than looking to someone representing their service, and having them look like a Sad Sack! ACU's, BDU's, etc are work and field gear. But if you work in an office, you should have the "business professional" attire suitable for that environment!

There are a couple I wouldn't mind seeing lightened up a little. I think the hair regulations could be lightened up a little to allow slightly longer hair styles for men and women. Also with Tattoos being so common in the civilian world I think they could allow tasteful (non-pornographic/ profane/ sexist, etc. tattoos like sleeves to be visible on forearms.

Perhaps there should be a provision allowing fatigues to be worn by all nursing personnel in deployed medical facilities. Westmoreland's demand we wear starched white dresses in the red mud in winter and red dust in summer - not to mention when engaged in triage of men fresh from the field was not generally respected - and never should have been supported. I would not necessarily REMOVE anything; however, I would change a great deal. In this new information age it is criminal that the AR 670-1 is not available as a well-managed, simple, open-access, Wikipedia-style OFFICIAL webpage with several links from the home page to provide all relevant information – including lots of pictures and diagrams – to provide easy to understand instructions.

Up until the recent edition of AR 670-1 (25 May 2017), the regulation contained outdated uniforms -- most notably the BDUs – with line drawings as to how one was to affix their insignia on the uniforms. The Regulation included information and illustrations for uniforms that have not been authorized for wear in over a decade.

The answer to this outdated publication was to leave it in place and issue a flurry of ALARACT messages implementing new uniforms and making changes to the policies/procedures for wearing them (these seemed to change with the frequency that one changes their socks). The problem with this method was the ALARACTs were numbered and buried where only a Chinese or Russian hacker could find them. One had to thumb through numerous irrelevant ALARACTs to find the one specific to their needs.

When I returned to active duty after a break in service that made my old BDUs obsolete, I had to purchase new ACUs and insignia, but had no ready guide for how to properly set up the uniform. By luck and some careful observation, I managed to get most of it right. Fortunately, the first day I wore these new ACUs, this commissioned officer happened upon a new Private fresh out of AIT who had the moral courage to set me straight on a few niggly details I was not aware of.

Finally, the Army has published a new, updated regulation; however, much of the new regulation is bereft of the helpful illustrations that aid one to properly acuter their uniform (unless you’re a Sikh). Perhaps those charged with producing the regulation felt gun shy about going through the necessary staffing hoops and releasing a publication with such detail for fear of the inevitable changes that are bound to occur. For example, the portion concerning the wear of the ACU/OCPs (Chapter 4 “Combat Uniform”) covers roughly half a page and does not have any accompanying illustrations. Contrast this with previous editions of AR 670-1 which devoted several pages and at least a few illustrations to the proper set up, wear and appearance of the Battle Dress Uniform.

Imagine rather if we had a website called https://AR670-1.army.mil with the full authority of the written regulation to establish the “Army Standard” for the proper wear and appearance of our uniforms. There, the First Sergeant would have a no nonsense reference (complete with photos and diagrams) to set the young private or second lieutenant straight concerning what “right” looks like. Each page could contain the text concerning the uniform -- along with photos -- so that there is no room for debate or misunderstanding. Each page may contain a link to the ALARACT message that implemented the change as well as provide the NSNs for each item and the various sizes. For new uniform items, a list of AAFES Exchange Clothing Sales along with availability dates might also prove useful. For that matter, a link to http://www.shopmyexchange.com to order various items on line from AAFES would prove helpful.

Each webpage in the website could be changed overnight whenever certain uniforms are updated without requiring the full-blown revision of an entire regulation as soon as a new ALARACT hits the street. All that would be required is the necessary change to the “chapter” concerning that uniform or wear policy, and a new “implementation date” on the cover page.
Additionally, a crafty Knowledge Manager with a few code crunchers could compile an app on the website that would allow for “on demand” publishing of the full AR 670-1 to allow for the Command Sergeant Major to download a printable PDF to keep in his binder for ready reference without the aid of internet access.

Great question! The no-sunglasses on head or around neck rule. It's hard to enforce because so many disregard it, especially senior leaders, and it just makes sense to put glasses on our heads so we don't lose track of them.

Nail polish. As in not allowed at all instead of the current standard. Which many of my peers can't seem to abide by.
It makes me bananas to see acrylic nails or polish on professional soldiers.
I'm sure it's not a popular opinion but it's what I would personally remove.

My old 1SG (the old cowboy)(before he was Army) hated the moustache regs, after I returned from my 6 week hitch in Hilla (it was only supposed to be 2 weeks) with the International troops, I told Top about the Czechs with their full mutton chops, and told him if he saw the Polish SGT MAJ he would defect in a heartbeat, his moustache was so long you couldn't see his mouth. Tattoo guidelines. Look, I get the whole no offensive or racist etc tattoos, that makes sense. I understand no tattoos on the face and head, but everywhere else should be okay. The argument is in the marines and navy they wear battle unis with the sleeves cuffed up, and what about pt? Well the last time I checked it's all about war, and when you're in war everything is covered up, and you could even make an argument that only the face should be restricted but it's just easier to keep shitbirds from testing the rules by saying no tattoos above the top of your neck, aka no head tattoos.

You have standards for the mustache, those can stay. You have no shave guidelines keep those in place. And let the men grow their hair out so long as they follow the regulations as they currently apply to women. Because the damn excuses about the gas mask not sealing and all that other bullhonky goes right out the door the second they let you have a no shave profile and let women keep their hair long. Either the women follow the male guidelines or the men follow the female,guidelines... And I guarantee you you'd attract some more potential high speed soldiers who don't wanna have short hair...

Fleece cap in ACUs. Unless you are on a detail in cold weather OR in the field, there is NO reason for use of the watchcap as a cover in ACU duty uniform. I just saw a soldier wearing this in 80 degree weather. Dumbest change I've seen in the reg since the attempt to limit tattoos.

I would allow sunglasses to be worn on the head or from the front of the uniform. Sometimes you just need your eyes un-shaded for a second, but don't have the time to zip them up in a case to stuff in your pocket, or shove them in unprotected to get scratched up by sand in your pocket.

Allowing Men to have Neatly Groomed Beards. We have not had to use the M40 Pro Mask in years. Through 4 Combat tours it sat in the bottom of my C bag in a connex. Beards are professional and the go way back in Military History.

None. They were designed to implement uniformity and attention to detail, self-discipline, and accountability. It revealed funcionality, operability, and cleanliness of the uniform. It reinforced esprit de corps while in a group formation. It exercised self discipline while one was out and about while in uniform either on or off post. It became the base of how you treated your personal weapon and TO&E, and your MOS specific equipment. One little part missing or out of place can mean life or death for yourself and your battle buddies. Iʻm done. As you were.

The wearing of ACU's in Garrison Environment.. Let me explain.... ACU's should be Field or Combat Uniform, not in Garrison when you work Mess, supply, motor pool, office, medical or dental. There should be a Garrison uniform that is cheaper does not require boost or hat. Nothing worse then doing PMCS on equipment and tearing or getting oil on ACU's then having to buy new ones.

I would remove the restriction of wearing an EFMB at the same time as a non-medical combat badge. i.e., 1 Badge from EITHER Category 1 or 2

Being "Retired" I have no response for this discussion however,,, If the APFU[Army Physical Fitness Uniform] is manufactured with a "reflective" print for visibility, what in the world are those "Hy-Viz" belts I see Soldiers wearing while conducting PT? Sp4 Byron Skinner A common question. On hands in pockets sew they closed, problem solved. Back in the day especially in garrison is saluting every time you encounter an officer. I would think a once a day salute would be enough. When reporting to an officer on request yes it a formality of discipline that needs to be observed. But in the motor pool, or when an officer walks into a barracks, or in the field I can't see any purpose for saluting.

Soldiers walking or standing around with their hands in their pockets looks very unprofessional. When I was in the Army and was a platoon sergeant that is one thing I really hated. I solved the problem and it didn’t take long, Hell they probably don’t put their hands in their pockets now. I gathered about a half dozen bricks. Painted them bright colors, pink, yellow and red. When a soldier was caught with his/her had in a pocket they had to carry a brick everywhere they went. The only way to get rid of the brick was to find another soldier with hand in pocket and pass the brick. If both hands were in their pockets then they got two bricks. After about 2 weeks the bricks were gone. One guy carried a brick for about 2 weeks and the message was very clear.

The old overseas cap was great with Kakis or the old green Class As. You could not beat the BDU cap, it had a good visor to keep the rain off your glasses, flaps to keep your ears warm in the winter , kept your hair dry in the rain and you could stuff it into your pants pocket when you had to take it off

When I first retired I was allowed to change any regulation that I wanted to. If you are still active duty then you should be prepared to follow the orders of those appointed to make the orders. That is what made me different from the other people of the world for all those years. That fad which is itching you today will go away when you make the necessary changes in your life. Since you made the individual decision to follow regulations (AR 670-1), or any other guidelines "Be proud" of the seriousness of your daily actions. In the twilight of your days your appreciation of the moments of your youth becomes vivid and concise. We live in a real world so be true to each commitment. Not to argue or debate just looking back over the last several decades. STAY STRONG

Remove all the excess patches, pins, brooches, fuzzy dice, curb feelers, and bobble head crap from the uniforms. The army goes way overboard to distinguish everyone from everyone else. One force = one fight. The Marines resisted the ridiculous name tapes for many years before being ordered to put on that crap. All the "my unit is cooler than your unit" leads to nothing but trouble IMHO. When going into combat, they should absolutely be sanitized; yet we see silly patches on most. I have plenty of shiny shit to hang on my dress uniform, but utility uniform should be naked. (8 years Marines 0351/0251, 9 years army and guard 11B/97E/91W)

I would agree with many here so far. The close cropped and maintained beard should bt GtG. And don't give me that BS about Promask seals. Either the current or former Canadian minister of Defense is a Sikh and designed a mask to work,properly with a beard. So BS rule. Also I agree with relaxing the mustache regs a bit. Only time I ever shaved mine off was when coming home from the field when we had to wear war paint. It was easier to shave it off than try and get that crap out of it.
