Campbell, it was voluntary but highly encouraged. I was hesitant at going but I enjoyed it when I went. Enjoyed it even more when I was done. It's a course that you'll love. Think about it, people pay good money to rappel and fast rope. It's like getting paid to do adventure training or an amusement park. However, local guidance expects the Army's only AASLT division to live up to that designation. Multiple levels of command will track this and communicate the expectation. Don't worry, though. While air assault school isn't mandatory it is "highly encouraged". If you want to study something ahead of time, study the various aircraft and their capabilities. Number of crew, mission, lift capabilities, number of passengers allowed or ACL (Allowable Cargo Load). Otherwise just pay attention in class. I imagine that it is highly encouraged for all MOS. If you are going to make the Army a career my advice is to go for it you are young and in shape you will make it. The school is not very hard. I resisted initially, but my squad leader taught me to climb rope.. I'm proud that I managed to make it through.. it was a fantastic school.
