Campbell, it was voluntary but highly encouraged. I was hesitant at going but I enjoyed it when I went. Enjoyed it even more when I was done. Opened the door to a lot of fun training afterwords. It&#39;s a course that you&#39;ll love. Think about it, people pay good money to rappel and fast rope. It&#39;s like getting paid to do adventure training or an amusement park. Since you&#39;re fresh from Basic/AIT, you&#39;re in good shape, and your mind is primed to accept instruction. The first two years that I was at Campbell it was optional...new CG came in and it was mandatory for a leadership position and everyone else was voluntold. However, local guidance expects the Army&#39;s only AASLT division to live up to that designation. Multiple levels of command will track this and communicate the expectation. Don&#39;t worry, though. You will attend a pre-AASLT pt program for a month to get you ready. While air assault school isn&#39;t mandatory it is &quot;highly encouraged&quot;. If you want to study something ahead of time, study the various aircraft and their capabilities. Number of crew, mission, lift capabilities, number of passengers allowed or ACL (Allowable Cargo Load). Otherwise just pay attention in class. Given that you are in AIT I would assume you are physically fit enough to get through it and your unit pretty much leaves you alone while you are in school. I imagine that it is highly encouraged for all MOS. If you are going to make the Army a career my advice is to go for it you are young and in shape you will make it. The school is not very hard. It will also help you on promotion points later.
