What I mean by this is do not sacrifice everything else in your life for the job. Being a hard charger is fine, working late, taking care of the men, performing the mission, these are all necessary. But do not work late every single night when you have a family at home that you are neglecting. Do not volunteer time after time for things that cause you to stay away when you know that relationships are falling apart. Make time for what you love outside the military; have a hobby, spend time with friends, have fun. When it is all said and done, whether you do your four and get out or retire with 20+ years, you will be out and it will be over. Make sure that you have something when you don't have the military anymore. This will also make getting out a whole lot easier because you will have those parts of your life that were not associated with the military, things that you can look back on and look forward to, that will still be there for you (family, friends, hobbies, etc). Approach them as if they are your brothers and you are their sister.
Do not fall for the first one that says he 'loves' you. Unless things have changed since I was a junior enlisted female (many, many, many years ago) some-- not all, but some-- of the guys place bets on who will be the first to 'score' with the 'fresh meat'. And they do keep score. Set a time-- give it 6 months-- that you are not going to date anyone you work with and STICK WITH IT. If someone really likes you that much-- he'll wait. (Dates are okay, but nothing physical.)
If a supervisor is acting a little too friendly, that is NOT OKAY!!! What IS okay is telling said supervisor that you are not comfortable with his level of 'friendliness'. (After all, it could be misinterpreted overzealous mentoring.) If he doesn't respond appropriately-- as in, either explains that he didn't mean for you to interpret it 'that way' or stop the behavior-- bring it to the attention of another NCO. The vast majority of guys out there are your allies and will help you.
Never, never, NEVER turn your back on a drink unless you left it in the hands of someone you know and trust with your life. Don't let someone bring you an open drink unless you had eyes on it from the time it was opened/poured until it got to your hands. Always have a 'battle buddy' (male or female-- but again, someone you trust with your life) if you are going to be drinking to the point of intoxication, and DO NOT suffer in silence if you think you got drugged. Get loud, get help, and get out of the situation FAST. (Good advice for anyone-- not just women.)

None of this is meant to make the guys look bad or to make you think you are unsafe. The vast majority of guys I have worked with over the past 20 years have been fantastic and supportive. Some have not, and it only takes one to be a creep. I met my husband at work-- a LOT of military women meet their eventual significant others through the military. I'm just cautioning you to be very careful while you are very young and still a little starry-eyed and naïve.

And no-- I'm not making any judgments about you or your character. Learn how to tell the difference between a personal problem and someone just giving out shit as that is part of being a team.
4) Treat all with respect and honor for the uniform they wear. You are a team and in the end, THAT is the most important aspect.
5) Early in your career, MOST of it is a MIND game.. Laugh and let it wash.
6) ENJOY YOUR TIME in the service.. Pay attention to those little things, the places you go, the friends you make. Before you know it, it will be the past and only a memory.
7) If the 'job' you are in sucks, then buck up and make a change. EARN it, work for it and better yourself. If you hate being the shoe bottom, then it is up to YOU to step up and make something more of yourself. Don't blame everyone else or bitch about how it sucks or how hard it is.. Go back to school, work hard and earn it.

In the end, YOU will determine if it will be the best time of your life, something you will cherish and be proud as hell for until the day you die... or something you will hate and want out of early on.

EDIT: One last thing. If you see wrong being done, report it. If wrong is done to you and it is outside the boundaries of dealing with it personally, report it. Don't let 'peer pressure' sway you. Being military is an honor and NO ONE has a right to abuse, harm, degrade or attack someone else, physically or emotionally.

There IS a line between the team and unit vs someone outside honorable boundaries and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. IF something bothers you, go to your IMMEDIATE supervisor. Don't jump the chain. But talk to them, explain to them the issue and they will get involved (at least a good supervisor will). If the problem is with the supervisor, go to the next step up the chain of command. Don't be afraid to do the right thing because of how it might look to others. This is not the boy scouts or high school 'cool kid groups'. This is the United States Military and for me, that means respect, honor, duty and team. And if someone is fucking that up, I personally will and would never put up with it.

With that being said, don't jump the gun either.. Learn to bend, learn to be one of the team. Figure out boundaries with your team and let them know.. Whether it be lewd jokes or pictures, jaw jacking or whatever, find what you can accept from your team mates and what line you won't cross.. There is a difference. People will joke around, make all sorts of jokes and shit.. If you can let it roll because it is all in fun, the better it will be. BUT also take a stand when it crosses that line I mentioned and let your team mates clearly know what your line is.. Don't assume they know. All those tough guys around you who call you a sick call ranger will be calling you in 10 years to get sworn statements for that time they twisted the crap out of their ankle at PT that one winter because they now have arthritis.
- Seek good leaders, if your NCO or LT aren't making leaders, go find ones that are.
- Three up one down: know how to do the three jobs above you, and the one below you at all times. Most of the time everything is at an 8th grade education level so it's not that hard.
-Take a correspondence course every month, minimum, they are easy, and the POS ass backwards dirt-bag in the unit is doing it, he'll get promoted before you.
- Exit strategy: The military is as hard on the body as it is on the mind. you should be trying out as many jobs and roes as you can so you can figure out what you do and don't like to do, start figuring out what you want to do in the civilian world and then find external online training for that, go for industry certifications if you're getting close to ETS. Post 9/11 isn't going to last forever, so don't think you're gonna get out and slack off in school while you're becoming a functioning member of society.
- Don't marry that stripper/bartender/waitress/tag chaser, The extra couple hundred a month you get when deployed isn't worth the cost of a divorce later down the road. Date a lot, have fun, wrap your tool
- Don't Add to or subtract from the population unless you have to.
- Making it to 20 years with two wars (depending on your MOS) isn't easy, so get that Thrift Savings plan going ASAP and put away at least 5% of each paycheck a month into it. If deployed drop as much as you can into it, you're not gonna spend it anyway. You still gotta have Net worth when you wanna use that VA loan so build up a savings, and don't blow it on a 2 door coup.
- Take someone who has a car loan under 3% for 60 months with you to buy a POV and not to a dealer anywhere near post.
