Now you have all these mini compounds that are harder to secure and lots of tax payers money has gone into building up their fence line since 9/11. We Army folk are not known for our quality real estate. To keep our troops tough, the powers that be closed down Fort Ord, CA. It closed during my tenure and I spent a career hearing crusty and bitter CSM's gripe because they would never get to go back. Dix only because there aren't a lot of bases that are close to New England. The closest is Drum, Bragg, and the very small very hard to get assigned to Virginia bases. Not only should we close installations, we should sell or otherwise dispose of the real property.
