I believe you have to have under 4400 points to be considered for BRS.

No blended for you if you have 13 yrs active duty. No minimum required. You can go into the reserves and do active duty tours until you hit about 17 years worth of active duty points then they will cut you off so that you don’t reach sanctuary.

SSG (Join to see) - Normally our reserve system uses "point" system to calculate retirement. As a reservist, you can get pension, but it is far lower than active duty based on part-time drilling instead of full-time duty. As mentioned, reservists normally draw at age 60 since they were part-time personnel. Sometimes, reservists get called to active duty and a few qualify for regular pensions immediately after retirement.

COL Harris was attempting to mention how most reservists qualify for lower pension at age 60, but how a small number still get full pension immediately after retirement.

You have more than 12 years of active duty. You would have to opt into blended retirement. So no, you will not fall into the new system unless you ask to be put in the new system. However, if you are going to be a traditional Reservist (weekend warrior) it probably won’t be advantageous to opt in. If your intent is to get 6% matching then you may be trading a short term gain for a long term benefit of a pension at 60 or earlier. Go to the Army community center finance person and ask them to do the math with you. Explain you situation and your goals. They should be able to get you the advise you seek. Good luck.

LTC Eugene Chu - You may want to clarify that Reservist actually get the same percentage of their pay at Regular Army according to actual days on duty. So SGT Branch would already qualify for 32.5 percent of his base pay at 60 just from his Active service. If he is like most of us that were leadership positions and pulling 100+ days a year, he could easily rack up another couple years creditable time toward retirement pay.

OK, this question causes me to ponder my own situation. First off, I am not familiar with the 'blended retirement system.' Where can I get information on this subject? Any help will be appreciated!!
