Local word of mouth is usually the best unless you are going somewhere foreign to you, then I would do an internet lookup with reviews.

Other. I make note of things as I'm out and about doing other things and when it comes time to decide where to go we just kind of go with the dartboard method.. lol

I use Yelp a lot to find places to eat, especially when I travel.

I talk to my goggle APP and it finds the nearest place for me to eat and connects me to MAP GPS. good SHIT!

I have had great meals at restaurants that friends, critics, and internet reviews have trashed. I have had horrible dining experiences at restaurants with great reputations, even 2 0r 3 Michelin stars. I find that in many cases stepping inside the foyer and taking a peek and a deep inhalation through the nose tells me everything I need to know.

Most of the time I try to make my own stuff or plan a trip to eat out - vs. spontaneous desperation = eating wherever I'm stuck & hungry! If I'm planning, then I've already thought about what I'd like to eat and pick based on experience or looking up info on Yelp.
