The California State Military Reserve (CASMR: Our CA state owned militia sometimes referred to as "smurfs"), are not really military--at least not one of the federal U.S. military branches (i.e. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard). While many are former military (and bring their former rank with them), you can be in with zero real military training/experience whatsoever. In fact, there are CASMR units supporting major CA ARNG units in our state, and they even wear the same uniform as us. However, where our uniforms say, "U.S. ARMY," theirs says "CALIFORNIA". First time I saw that I thought for a second someone had the last name California then realized it was on the wrong side.

In any case, being that this is a U.S. military networking site and those state militias are not part of the U.S. military, I would guess the answer should be no.

It seems that unless its Active duty, Guard or Reserve it doesn't belong here as RP profile rank. That would be My understanding, I was an Officer in CAP the USAF Auxiliary but even that or I'm sure Coast Guard Auxiliary would even apply here let alone a state militia rank. I only list My USAF rank, nothing else, that unless I misunderstood is the rule. (the exception maybe being ROTC or service Academy Cadets ?) I'm not an expert, is that correct ?

I haven't. By the way SrA Mike that all depends on what state you are in. When Massachustts organized theirs we would only take retirees or former military personnel.

SPC (P) Sage- I have been living under a rock because I have been unaware of State Militias. Now I have a question, can you be a member of the US Army and a State Militia at the same time? It would seem to me that these two organizations have competing demands and loyalties. Do you swear an oath to defend the Government of the State?? What if you are a member of the California Militia (they may not have a militia) and they plan to succeed from America? You mentioned there is a rank structure. So could you be SPC (P) in the Army and a CSM in the State Militia?

Even though I've looked into the State Defense Force for my area, I think SDF ranks are similar to Law Enforcement ranks, congrats but wrong forum.

Another interesting note:

Not sure how other state-controlled militias/reserve forces operate, but in California, those who only hold a particular rank within the state militia, such as certain officers, will put (CA) after their rank to denote it. Such as COL (CA) Bobby Badass.

The Ohio Military Reserve reports to the governor of Ohio through the Adjudant General's Department and wears military uniforms and has a rank structure, but it is not a Federal organization.

I serve as a Medic in the TN Military Dept under Tennessee Code Annotated 58-1-401. The TN State Guard is an all volunteer force of mostly prior and retired Federal military members. That being said, I do not have any of my TNSG rank or awards posted here. It just doesn't seem appropriate somehow.

There is a lot of speaking from the point of ignorance in this thread, educate yourself before you blather on. I am an Officer in the local State Guard, I just finished OCS, which consisted of 600+ instructional hours over 2 years of Drilling. We are one of the 3 elements of the state military department along side the Emergency Management Division and the National Guard. When ordered to State Active Duty we fall under Title 32.

In my state our State Defense Force is one of three Arms of the Guard. We have the Air National Guard (192nd Fighter Wing) Army National Guard (116th ICBT, 91st Cyber Command, 29th Infantry) and the Virginia Defense Force under the Virginia Dept. of Military Affairs. We work very closely with them, often cross training and conducting missions together. This photo depicts a communications exercise in which the VDF had point . It's VDF equipment shown in the photo. It's a hot seat for sure.
