If you’re nearing the end of a contract with the NG, can you switch over to Active Duty or Reserves and maintain your rank?

I’m curious how AD and Reserves consider rank, especially for Officers. I’d you leave the NG as say, a Captain, can you walk on as a Captain in the AD or Reserves?

I cant speak for AD but you can transfer to the USAR at any point without losing rank. Feel free to contact me for more info

Officers have different rules that based on your commission source require federal recognition. For enlisted, your rank generally transfers, and the specific rules are listed in AR 600-20 under enlisted date of rank.

Guard or reserve to active....
The regular army has to be short your MOS and rank, they post the call to active duty areas. You can game the system a little by switching career fields to one thats short to apply though.

Yes. For Soldiers enlisted and officer that complete their AD or NG contract and transfer to the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve) can transfer to AR (Army Reserve). This is a Human Resource issue and will be based on whatever is the situation at that moment; meaning how bad the other component need you. After 2003, the active component pretty much received any office who wanted to come over: not shit bags!!!!! Today’s environment? Who knows!
