If you are working in the Motir Pool, or other location where everyone is working in the same outdoor space, including the Platoon Leader (as an example) you do not salute them every time you lift your head. If the Officer walks away and comes back to the area, you salute again. If you think it is annoying to salute everytime you see the Officer, imagine how many times they salute. If the senior officer determines an area within their command is a no salute area, they can make that determination. When in doubt, SALUTE. Thank you for your service. I know that in my time, it depended entirely on both the situation and the senior in question. Ashore...particularly at a training command, you can't ever go "wrong" with rendering honors when you are "supposed" to. As a "STUD" at P-Cola, I almost wore my arm out. Afloat however, various skippers had different policies, and I recall that I only saluted when encountering a senior (pretty much O-4 and above) for the first time in some reasonable measure of time. For example, if I encountered my DH after quarters, I'd salute...but if we passed a few minutes later while walking the decks, we didn't. If I ran into him again an hour later, after he or I had left the deck...then yes, I'd salute again (leaving "presence"). As an O-1, I rarely saluted O-2 (there were not many around to begin with) and depending on billet, it could be "suicidal" to neglect to salute some O-3's, while in contrast, others would simply tell me they didn't expect it (though you'll learn to be VERY cautious about career/financial/personal advice from O-3s...ha!). Being forward deployed on the ground was an ENTIRELY different scenario...there are definitely times/places where you would not salute the CNO if you ran into him. My advice is to err on the side of caution until experience lends you to broader "options". Only times you do not salute is in a combat AO, in the field training, or wearing combat gear. If your salute can render potential danger to the shiny persons, then you only give a proper greeting and forgive the non-salute due to circumstances.
