Tough call! On the one hand, there's all the bad aspects you named. On the other hand, as SSG Trust Palmer said, you've got to go for it. These people have trained their entire lives in their sport and for many, the Olympics is the pinnacle of their career(s).

SSG Trust Palmer Not to the extent Rio is having. See the Lake Placid, Los Angeles games ... No sign of birth damaging diseases there or polluted swimming areas that the swimmers will have to contend with.

Public announcement! If you are a person that is into the news, you have heard plenty of rumors of the violence here in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, the mosquitos and I believe the water! Well I'm here to tell you, me and TeamUsa boxing team have been here 5 days with 0 problems! The mosquitos are regular, put the spray on you will not get bit! The violence is in certain areas at night! And the water at our hotel works perfectly fine, we just brush our teeth with bottled water to be safe! I feel terrible for those athletes who withdrew from the Olympics because they were frightened by the news! There dreams were ruined all because of people wanting to sell a story. Rio is a beautiful place!
