Just hope the family genes don't get you!!! I shudder to think what I've all spent on dental in my life. Then you wake up in massive pain one morning, go see the dentist, and he says 8 of your teeth have just died and are causing a potentially fatal infection in your jaw. My dad had the same thing happen.

People who get their teeth cleaned on a regular basis live on average ten more years than those that don't, so even if you never have any other dental work needed it pays to go to your dentist. The reason you live longer is your mouth is very close to your heart and other important bodily systems so keeping it healthy affects your overall health.

I use to only go to the dentist to have teeth pulled or stop the pain. Then I grew up and found how important the teeth were for health reasons. Now it is twice a year cleaning with occasional fillings replacement. My mouth feels a lot better now.

All I can say is that in half a century of life I never had mouth pain or issues until I allowed comments like these influence my judgement and I went to see the dentist. It wasn't until that night and several days after that I finally got to experience what mouth pain felt like. In retrospect, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

For the record, my dad had ritual like dental hygiene and never complained about teeth issue and never went to the dentist. Full disclosure: he never ate junk food or sweets either.

Not all problems lead to pain. Your teeth can still rot & not hurt. That usually means you also need a root canal at that point. A good dentist will also examine your mouth for suspicious lesions possibly from cancer as well.

Except for the fact that you almost have to be independently wealthy to afford Dental insurance.
