They come from my first three months in Vietnam administering battle casualties. However, the funniest story I can remember, one that was a "horror" in a sense, was a film of the first tests of Ford's first prototype "Jeep". They claimed it could be air dropped without a pallet. Simply hook four parachute straps to the eye bolts on each wheel hub and kick it out the door. When it hit the ground, the four wheels and axles quickly departed the landing zone, in four different directions, without the Jeep. I guess the engineers at Ford were horrified. We all had a good laugh Response by CPT Jack Durish made Oct 27 at 2016 1:42 PM 2016-10-27T13:42:06-04:00 2016-10-27T13:42:06-04:00 SPC Erich Guenther 2017700

It wasn't really my horror story it was more a comedy for me to watch. It was my 1SG horror story though. So at the 101st Chapter Cases were kind of weird in that they were still treated with some respect because they did their job and pulled their weight when a deployment came along, the commeraderie of the unit during a emergency pulled them back into acting like Soldiers. Never saw this with any other Army unit only the 101st Airborne. Anyways dealing with them in garrison when nothing was going on was murder for the 1SG. They were always getting in trouble and being placed on Extra Duty So the Chapter cases kind of banded together in my Company and called themselves the Low-Lifes and would leave their mark "LL" everywhere. Kind of like a gang. They all had about 4-5 months to go before getting kicked out but they got busy.

So you put them on a detail to paint the 3rd Brigade Commanders Jeep, you would see him drive up after the repaint then drive away and on the back of his jeep trailer worked into the camoflage was a large black "LL". Be cleaning the 1SG office while on CQ and say you bumped into a hanging picture and it fell........behind it, painted on the wall was an "LL". Lift a Container onto a trunk chasis with a forklift. Underneath was a large "LL" painted on the pavement. We were finding "LL"'s everywhere long after they were chaptered and they were still finding them every once in a while when I ETS'd. Some of the locations, like under the Container we really had no clue how they got the mark where they did. That's what happens when you partially trust folks that are up to no good. So if your on Ft. Campbell now and serving with the Rakkasans and see an "LL" somewhere.......thats the story behind it. Still feel bad for the 1SG. Was subsequently stripped to my boxers and T shirt and duct taped to a tree where I remained for the rest of the night. While they didn't take my rifle they did take my uniform as proof I had been captured. Very humbling having to walk out of the woods and then across base camp in Kpot, LBE and skivvies. Late Halloween night in the box during Force on Force IVO Brown Pass. One of our Platoon OCs was seriously troubled by the thought of ghosts and demons. This particular OC was tasked to get his NVGs on and get in front of the BLUFOR by going around and ahead of them on Alpine Pass. However.....another OC had already gone ahead on that one lane trail, got on top of a big rock in the bend of a corner, striped naked and poured chem light juice all over his body. It took half the night to chase "the victim" down and convince him that he hadn't really seen God. The driver in front of us was a notorious for being very reckless and made it down this hill with no problem. When it was our turn we made it about halfway before the road caved in and the truck did a handstand! I looked to the back of the truck (which is now vertical) and quickly realize that a nice big metal chop block is on a course for my head. I quickly move my head just in time and see the chop block hit the windshield, shattering it. This was in preparation for E&B (equalization and balance) electronic tests between launch control facilities and the launch facilities (silos) at Vandenberg AFB. I’m under the suspended floor laying on a cable rack with perhaps 14” of clearance above me. All I had was a droplight and flashlight. While Ken, my teammate, was fishing a cable down through the tray I looked over and saw two little beady red eyes looking at me perhaps 18” from my face.

In a very low voice I said, "Ken."

What?

There's a rat down here big as a football.

He laughed and asked, "Does he have a name?"

I dunno, but if he comes any closer I'm going to shit my pants, then I'm going to die, then I'm going to come back and haunt you.

Thankfully, the rat scampered off to wherever rats scamper off too and Ken finally stopped laughing.
