In the 1980s many units received cold weather training. I had a full issue of cold weather gear. Can today's Army fight in cold weather?

I remember those boots. Today's Army can fight in cold weather, but we sure have a lot of action in hot weather lately

Technology is outdated. Cold gear is issued in Korea.

ON the side of a forested mountain in Germany in the winter with snow blowing. Give me some fleece lined Bergstiefels. Wearing all my regular issue cold weather gear and these boots. I was still chilly except my feet, they were sweating. As long as the feet were warm, the rest was just an inconvenience The appearance of the boot has gotten busier in the intervening 30 years, but if I'm going out in the cold I want a pair of these.

They issued me a pair of them white ones.. they didn’t seem to fit right.. I told that Airman and he said “ya gotta break ‘em in,”. Get used to ‘em and he disappeared behind some O.D. Cloth curtains.
I pushed on the buzzer and a SSGT. came out front. I told him they didn’t fit correctly. He asked what size and I told him and he came back with a black pair.. the ones the Airman gave me were for narrow feet.. That SSGT. got that contraption to measure my feet correctly before going back and coming out with a brand new pair. He made sure they fit me right.. and said he’d set that Airman right.. I don’t know what his prob was.. I didn’t care .. He needed to leave it in the back room or at the barracks..

Bunny Boots! LOL I still have a pair somewhere. Yes, I bought them! The Germans packed EVERYTHING from my barracks when I PCS'd back to the States. I had to reimburse Supply for them before I could clear since they were gone!

The answer I believe is “no”. Most units don’t prepare for this contingency well. I think the exception is the 25th ID and 10th Mountain

CW5 Jack Cardwell The Army knows how to adjust and adapt. If they are fighting and it starts snowing they won’t stop while they wait for the Quartermaster to find them some booties.

The Army certainly issues decent, if not good, gear & requires Soldiers to take it on deployment - you should have seen the look of utter confusion my first deployment to Iraq when the packing list included a half-duffel full of cold weather gear.

That being said, having gear and knowing how to live & work in the cold are two separate things. If the need came quickly, hopefully a few hip-pocket training sessions and those who have past experience with the cold would be enough to take care of & teach everyone else.

The 1st Marine Division fought in pretty chilly temps at the Chosin Reservoir long before all of the cold weather gear came out. Equipment freezes as well as people.
