In what capacity should the Maryland National Guard be utilized to assist with the Baltimore riots?

It looks like events in Baltimore have been quickly deteriorating over the past 24 hours and the Maryland National Guard have been placed on "alert" to be called up to assist. If mobilized in what capacity should the soldiers be utilized in your opinion?

Edit: As of 1817 CST Fox News is reporting that the Governor has mobilized the National Guard.

This is pretty close to home for me. Just a short jaunt up the road, actually. I think the National Guard - if called up - should be deployed to protect people and property.

I submit that there's no call for the violence the demonstrators are perpetrating, but I'm not part of the demographic that feels they are being disrespected - and killed - by the police, so I admit I may not exactly "get it." Still, I don't see how all the violence does any good at all.

Protect government assets and provide logistical support for police. The NG simply isn't equipped or trained to do more than that.

Any help they can provide is better than none. As long as there are none like the one who was protesting in uniform. Guardian Angels working overtime in Baltimore. Protect them all.

I loathe the situation and have a great amount of rage I feel towards the rioters. Because of them, that's all the justification racists need for treating me and other professional blacks like me as subhuman.

Let the National Guard shoot looters and rioters.

Provide a presence; maintain stability; free up law enforcement; crowd control. Detain looters and allow law enforcement to take them into custody for processing.

Only to protect state or government property such as capitol buildings and things like that. No patrolling or similar to what the guard did in Missouri when those riots broke out. I think this is a different animal all together and may get to the LA riots level.

Best role for the Guards is presence patrols; securing key sites/locations; freeing up law enforcement to take on the protesting anarchists/thugs (yes I said the thug word) and criminals. NG does not have authority to arrest but can apprehend and detain and then transfer the law breakers over to the proper authorities for processing.
