His MOS involved airframe on the Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) and subsequent to getting home he went to community college here and took a 2 year program in Aeronautics Dept in Rotary Wing Air Frame. He hasn't looked back since. He feels like he knew more than some of the instructor because of his MOS school and practical experience. But getting the course done at the community college he became certified. He told me often that had he not had the MOS he had that perhaps he would never have gotten certified. Remember, though, PVT Kahmer, I am talking about 1971 time frame. Go for it, that's what I say. Does the Army have some sort of guidance program that helps you zero in your choices of Army schools that will not only be of great benefit to the Army but great benefit to you once you are ready to transition to civilian life? You can be a mechanic, you can be flight, you learn a lot. Its fun and rewarding, but it's not always easy. I have only had this MOS for my entire career (over 28 years combined service). If you are good with your hands and like being outside more than inside, then you should consider this career. You will learn skills that can be used outside the Army when it's time for you to exit the military. And since I just retired 2 days ago, I happen to know there is a vacancy. Are you mechanically inclined and good with your hands? If so I would say absolutely. as long as you feel you would be happy with doing that job. I've seen tons of guys jump all over a MOS due to a big sign on bonus only to find out they hated their job, and it made them take less pride in themselves, their unit, and position. The best military job is the one you know you are going to enjoy whether it be Admin, or Repairing vehicles.

As far as civilian opportunities, if you can fix an aircraft, you can probably repair most things. Its definitely a MOS that is a career opportunity as SFC stated. If not Aircrafts need repair in civilian life too. Consider futhering your education in the military and you should be set.
