Is an understanding of perspective necessary to be an effective leader?

If not "effective" at least it gives you a better insight as to overall goals. Helps the leader know what the end goal is that they are grinding towards.

I absolutely agree. Good leaders understand the soldiers, unit, and higher HQs and the roles they play in operations.

It's hard to relate to your troops if you can't see what they see. Without perspective you're just a position not a leader.
