Is anyone familiar with the approval process to interview soldiers for publication?

I am working on my dissertation for my doctorate. My advisor mentioned that I would need Army approval along with my IRB review. I assume this would come from S2. Is anyone familiar with this process, who needs to approve it, if its a memo or something else. Really any leads. My S2 didn't know and the IRB board didn't exactly either. They simply said they heard of people publishing as a government employee and getting in trouble. I assume this is to prevent SI from getting out or some other.

Have you checked with PAO?
My only other idea would be email the Sergeant Major Academy or War College and ask them. Students at those institutions get publish stuff all the time.

Usually requests of that type go through PAO. They should be able to assist you with your efforts. Good luck on the doctorate!

The Army also has an IRB, when I went to inquire I was told to go through University IRB process and get approval first and then to submit it through the Army IRB which will probably fast track it if already approved. But I also had to go through the PAO and they would submit to get a security check on it prior to publication. Military academies have their own separate process and since it is usually not human research can get published with only PAO and security checks.

Does your dissertation cover actions you took in the military? If it's unrelated you shouldn't need a pre-publishing review.

I would say it depends on what the dissertation is about. If it isn't military related and you only refer to the ones you interview as "Soldier 1, Soldier 2, etc." why would you need any authorization at all? Maybe a little more information regarding the subject might help someone more familiar with this give you better guidance.

The S2 has nothing to do with reviewing documents for publication when it comes to something like that.

As an SSR - whenever I debriefed anyone with SCI who was ETSing or retiring, we had to tell them if they were to publish anything they had to go through the Pentagon publishing office. I don't know any contact or more than that or if that would be the place to go.

If you have access to classified and are writing any type of publication that has to do with your time exposed to classified, yes you'd have to have it reviewed to ensure no classified information inadvertently gets out.

The topic is how leadership impacts retention, specifically if positive or negative leadership effects retention rates. I will also interview leaders on how they lead soldiers and how they effect retention. All information gathered will be soldiers opinions and experiences. Then only military publications or works will be AR or ADP that is already oubkically available. I understand PAO will review before final publication, but my IRB wants some sort of JAG approval before I start researching.

First step would be your unit or post PAO, they should be able to direct you from there.
