I've participated in some ATA tournaments. I'm not a huge fan of ATA though.

I was trained for the past ten years by an instructor with roots in the WTF style. We had our own league with 12+ schools in Texas. Our tournaments were run by Blackbelts ONLY, and had pre-registered judges so there was never a moment when participants just sat around and did nothing.

I've only participated in three ATA tourneys, but they were scrambling for judges, and asked brown and red belts to assist on judging. Sloppy in my opinion, when you have inexperienced brown belts calling points.

Moreover, the breakdown of brackets almost always had everyone win a medal or trophy. I'm not too fond on passing out participation awards. Just my two cents, but I believe you have to work hard for that hardware.

I'm with a WTF school, but considering leaving it. This is good to know. (The school, not the WTF.)

The application period for All-Army Taekwondo program is open now and accepting applications. Please see the pertinent info below:

APPLICATION PERIOD: now through 19 APR 2016

TRIAL CAMP: 8 JUN - 1 JUL (Fort Indiantown Gap, PA)

USAT NATIONALS: 2-8 JUL (Richmond, VA)

Some general information:
- Applications are accepted during the application period only. Apply online at https://cloud.mwr.army.mil/apptrac Enter the site by setting up and using a user name and password if you haven't done so already.

- Selections are based upon resumes submitted. As part of the online application, please complete the "related experience" field by submitting details of your taekwondo experience. Only Black Belts will be considered.

- In addition to applying online, you will also need to scan and email, fax, or attach to your application the following documents (See below) to qualify for the Trial Camp:

1) Proof of Black Belt in Taekwondo which was issued by the World Taekwondo Federation (Kukkiwon) or USA Taekwondo.

2) Proof of 2016 membership in USA Taekwondo. This can be accomplished online at https://www.usat.hangastar.com/login.aspx If not already registered, please BE SURE TO REGISTER with ALL-ARMY TAEKWONDO as your club affiliation. Our club number is 2135.

- Those selected come to a Trial Camp and if deemed at the appropriate skill level to participate, will participate in the USA Taekwondo National Championship. Should sufficient duplicate entries be received for the weight classes, an All-Army fight-off or championship may be conducted to select the final team that will be supported for the nationals.

- Those who are selected to the All-Army team that will be sponsored for the nationals will remain at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA in a training camp until the National Championship (around 2 JUL 16). The team will then travel to the Nationals. After that you would return to your unit.

- If you do not qualify or are not selected for the Nationals, (as determined by the coaching staff and Army Sports), you would return to your unit prior to 2 JUL 16

- USA Taekwondo has granted a waiver for the military to directly report entrants for the 2016 National Championships without a qualifying process.

- You may also participate in state championships that will be being offered this spring. If you have already qualified for the USAT Nationals through a State Championship by the time the All-Army Trial Camp begins, you will still eligible to be considered for selection. Please note: If you choose to participate in state championships, you must compete in the same weight class that you enter for the All-Army Trial Camp - because that will be the weight class that is reported to USA Taekwondo. You will NOT be permitted by USAT to switch weight classes.

- At this time, there is no CISM (World Military) Championship on the schedule for 2016.

AGAIN, apply online at - https://cloud.mwr.army.mil/apptrac

- To complete the application, you will need such information as your commander's enterprise email and contact telephone number. Please ensure that you enter his/her military email correctly, since all notifications and approvals hinge on the AKO address being correct. If it is entered incorrectly your application will never move forward.

- You will also need to enter the date you took the Level I Anti-Terrorism Training. The date you took the AT level 1 training must be NO EARLIER THAN 8 JUL 2015 - or your certification will need to be renewed. We need this to be current in order to prepare orders through the completion of the event. To renew your training, visit https://jkodirect.jten.mil/

- As part of your application, you will need to insert your achievements in the sport of taekwondo including such things as results of tournaments, how long you have been competing, etc.

- If there are any special circumstances with your military status, such as a PCS within the dates listed above, deployment, etc - please alert me to this with an email or phone call so we can plan ahead for the best course of action. You need to be approved by the commander who will release you to come to camp. So if you are PCSing, it will have to be your new commander. Most of the time, it is easier to extend at your current unit.

National Guard and Reserve Soldiers may apply. ARNG and USAR personnel need to submit additional forms and copies of information either directly to me or attached to your application. Blank forms and additional information can be found at the following link: http://www.armymwr.com/recleisure/sportsandfitness/all_army_sports_applications.aspx It's imperative to get the forms and info complete as soon as possible so we can initiate the newly implemented processes for activation orders. ONLY National Guard and Reserve personnel need to complete these additional forms. USAR and ARNG WILL NOT be considered for selection until the four documents (DA Form 1058, DA Form 5960, Copy of MEDPROS, and Copy of PT Test) have been received.
