Being able to afford child care is the first major problem, finding care is a whole other problem from what I have seen and heard.

While I was in service affording child care was never a concern... We were a family. We owned our own home off post, with an affordable mortgage. On nice days my daughter walked to the school (a 1/4 mile away) or rode her bike; if the weather was bad my wife drove her to school. We didn't live an extravagant lifestyle, but we never lacked anything we needed.

One year the school asked military families to fill out a form about our service and our income. I was surprised to discover that our daughter qualified for the 'free lunch' program because the federal rules for the program went by the income on your W2 (which counted just base pay) not your actual income. When I was promoted to E7 she no longer qualified for a "free" lunch, but did qualify for the "reduced cost" lunch at 10¢.

I know the cost of living has gone up (a lot!) but soldiers also make a lot more than we did then. The notion that someone in the military "needs" two incomes strikes me as usually being either very poor money management or a young junior enlisted who married into an instant family already in debt. Obviously this won't be a popular opinion, but that's how I see it.

Absolutely, We pay for our 3 grandchildren's childcare at a cost of almost 16,000. a year in small town Texas. That's money we could be saving for their college.

My children are all grown but having my wife in a memory care unit is what is my major stress. her costs are over $8500 a month and we are on a fixed income, using our backup money while it lasts. My stress is financial, her quality of life and the fact that she does not remember who we are.
