Is discipline lacking in our Special Forces, and Navy SEAL teams?

SEAL teams are without a doubt world class warriors, but have they gone to far away from the military bearing necessary for a cohesive military unit to accomplish there jobs. As witnessed by the Gallagher trial. Is unit loyalty being put above common sense and even lawful behavior? Murder is murder, war is war, there should be a dark line between the two, not a gray area. I think the entire Navy leadership needs to be re-trained on the basics. Seems like every day I read Navy Times and somebody in a leadership position is getting shit canned.

It is a lot more complicated than just that. In my opinion we recruit a certain type of person to do a very specific thing with little to no input. Sometimes those things are very violent and aggressive. Lets not be too quick to pass judgement on warriors that have been asked to do things the common Soldier would or could not do, then wonder why they drifted off course. I am not condoning any actions, but I can see a clear connection between the lifestyle and bad decisions.

Not to muddy the waters, but I think a large part of it also has to do with mission ambiguity, which also comes down to leadership. Tell these top notch operators what you want them to do, and let them go do it.

I learned WAY back when that what a leader absolutely positively MUST provide as part of a mission statement is three things: Mission (take the hill); intent (to provide overwatch for future operations); and limitations (must approach during times of darkness, do not approach from South side, do not utilize indirect fire). If a mission statement is lacking or unclear in ANY of these three elements, the subordinate unit will be forced to improvise. Any success in that scenario is despite the leader, and any failure is because of him/her.

Too often, lately, our Troops have been sent out without clear missions, and then we wonder why they can't figure out what "right" looks like.
