When is it right or acceptable to deny soldiers the right to career progress and as well as self progress: ie: civilian education? I have came across this issue my whole career. I have recently been approached by troops from other Brigades, Battalions, and Squadrons about how their leadership has denied them schools and boards. Why is this unacceptable behavior happening? Thoughts please........

When a Soldier is under-performing...this should be followed by a detailed counseling about the event and a plan of action how to overcome.

Ask to see a full copy of their counseling packet and that may answer the question for you. Chances are, if they are seeking support outside of their unit then something isn't right. I doubt that the whole chain of command is that ate up.

There is always a reason behind it and chances are no one is going to admit to it....it's much easier to say my command is being evil rather than taking personal responsibility right?

Sounds a lot like other aspects of our great nation as well, lack of personal responsibility.

easier to blame someone else for your troubles than accept that you are the reason.

Lack of responsibility is the correct answer! Kids perform poorly at school, blame the teach. Can't hold a job, blame the employer! And so forth! Career progression in the military or civilian world is based on each individual. Grant it, there are times and places that people are screwed, to put it simply. But not 95% of the time!!!!!

And SFC Swartz is right, our society/nation has gotten that way in general!

Totally understand where you all are coming from, but from my experience since I have been in, there have been numerous times that great soldiers have been treated unfair. Some leadership is great and would like to see people progress, also you have those that do not want to see you progress. Army problems like these happen across the globe but we as individuals are left with a decision. Either do something to change it at what ever cost, get out of that career field, or do nothing. I hear how bad leadership is from all ranks but a lot of times people are afraid to take the lead and report it or if it gets covered up, they are not persistent in getting the job done. So, issues are left unresolved and it continues to spread like a virus. But if you are willing to sacrifice things as a leader and show your subordinates that you do not tolerate this type of behavior, others will follow. But remember, sometimes matters have to get worse before it gets better. Thank you all for serving your country!
