A friend of mine has been in the Army a little over 3 years and has failed 3 boards, was counseled for it and so on. He was told he has one more shot to get his P-status or he's barred (he didn't go into detail) but he said something about the possibility of getting it automatically based on the word of the CO or something. Is there something to this? If not, how long does he have before he's chaptered for failure to progress? He wants to stay in.

Under the new promotion system after you've been in the primary zone a certain amount of time you move into the mandatory integrated list, unless you've been barred. Barring someone is the only way to prevent them from becoming automatically promotable. Six months after the bar is initiated the chapter should be initiated.

If you're barred can you be removed from the list? Is there a way to prevent the bar? He's a good soldier he just has confidence issues.

PVT(P) Aaron M. M. Bryant when you are barred you become non promotable. He can prevent the bar by passing the board. Boards are like any other difficult task in life, they just take practice and preparation. If you lack confidence you can't expect to go in there on test day and crush it without ever practicing. Tell him to practice and ask his leaders to do a mock board.

What regulation states that? I have looked through 600-8-19 and found nothing for my case. I have 29 months tig as an e4 and I’ve heard of this through the grape vine but never been able to find it in black and white.

What garbage is this? Automatic promotion to E-5? It is bad enough that everyone is a winner and there are no losers nowadays, but to automatically make someone a leader if they are not qualified...dear sweet baby jesus. Pvt. Snuffy will be Sgt. Snuffy and degrade the ARMY further.

SGT (Join to see) not envious. I dont want unqualified idiots leading joe to their death because the army automatically promoted them because they were substandard and met time in service requirements.

CPL (Join to see) I agree, but say in the Infantry, field sanitation is important, same with medical and a whole slew of crap that could be useless unless you enter combat with a near peer. However, as was asked of me at my board about where is the school of logistics, who the heck needs to know that.

SGT Gregory Cole - I got my automatic promotable status and still had to do everything you had to do to become an NCO the only thing different between us is that board. But depending on your MOS I might have had to work a little harder or vice versa.

It doesn’t apply to E-4. SPC needs to go to the board to be promoted. However, E-5 in their primary zone for a certain period of time will be put on the MIL then get promoted if they have the points! Still need to make points to pick up either way

Is it possible for someone to automatically get a P-status after a certain amount of time in the Army?

Alright, let me Explain this as clear and concise to the point. With the New MLI (Mandotory List intergration) used to be CLI (Command List integration) you get your Promotable status after 2 years time in service as Specialist. And the only thing that would stop you from picking up your stripes is 1. Points (promotion points) and 2. BLC (Basic Leader Corse) which is mandatory now. You will not be promoted to Sergeant unless you have gone to BLC Period. You can make points and if you don’t have BLC then that can halt your career. The ONLY loop hole would be if you are deployed and your leadership can waiver you without BLC. But it’s up to your Leaders in your units to send you to school but it’s ultimately up to You to keep bothering and Hurrassing them about it. If all else fails take the initiative go to your School NCO usually at S3 and see what you need to make your own school packet. Make a copy of everything. Give one to your leader. And if they lose it take it to S3 yourself and the Schoo NCO will tell you your next report date For BLC, packing list, etc. Done deal!

The worst enemy of a Soldier is the barracks lawyer, all young enlisted should decide shorty after they make PFC/SPC weather they want to make a go at promotion and if they have the traits to become a leader and take on additional responsibility. They should be working on developing confidence and skill sets prior to being boarded by having good peers and junior NCO's taking a hand at developing the next generations of NCO's. The days of career privates if that ever existed are over, their are only so many slots for each rank in each MOS and a total number of permitted manpower in big Army. If the Army allows those that either don't want to promote or can't stay then you prevent others from moving up. I was an 11B back in the day and I promoted at min TIS/DOR and was a SGT SL in 26 months. While your CO signs off on promotion board packets the board decides if a troop has the points or ability. The NCO corp already suffers from folks that should never have had stripes so its wise to make sure those that have the ability get promoted over those just wanting to stay.
In the end your friends First Line leader is responsible for making the determination if he/she is ready. If he/she can't cut it then maybe they should either buckle down and become a quality candidate for promotion or look into back up plan "B" in the civilian world.

He shouldn't get chaptered out but he can get barred to reenlistment.
During his counselling did they mention what he needed to do to correct his deficiencies?

Not that he mentioned, they just told him he has to be more confident.
He re-enlisted already, would that have any impact on him getting on the list even if he's barred from reenlistment or other bars?

PVT(P) Aaron M. M. Bryant a bar to reenlistment initiates a flag. You cannot be promoted if you're flagged.

I was in a combat unit with a non combat MOS. We were E5 short so us Spec 4s were doing E5 stuff. Except those poor E4 that were AJed to fill Tops CQ and guard rosters. My promotion points where sky high 900+ in the 80s. Got sent to PLC kicking and screaming but ended up in the top 5 of (to me) Basic training part 2. Never was asked to go to the E5 board mostly because I didn't ask. When I PCSed I was just breaking the 900 point barrier. Re-enlisted and found , at my next unit, I wasn't going to make it a career. ILL never forget, at my first formation I got berated because my 8th ID patches shadow could be seen under the 4th ID patch. Then I got yelled at for wearing tanker boots in the field. 'Why are your wearing those?' They asked. Because I earned them at Baumholder and Graf going downrange.

Depending on his MOS he can get an automatic “P-status” after being in for 4 years. He then has 1 year to attend BLC, and can also lose his P Status for expired PT or weapons. At least that’s how it is with 4 soldiers in my unit. All four received an automatic promotable status at their four year mark.

He’s 11B and he attends the board next week. He doesn’t hit 4 years until September.

PVT(P) Aaron M. M. Bryant he can deny the board, if he feels he’s not ready he doesn’t have to go. And as far as I know, 11B is a “star” MOS or “star plus” so he should get an automatic promotable status after 4 years TIS he’ll just need BLC to be able to pin SGT.
