First, I did not not write this article. Second, I do not agree with this article. Third, I responded to the author via the www-site "Task and Purpose" and those comments are below. But, as always, I am interested in my fellow veterans comments and perspectives, as this is a topic I teach and discuss in school.

My comment:

Good article, but fundamentally flawed. Good discussion as well. No argument, the squad leader is the hardest job with largest spanof control.

The difference between officers and enlisted, especially NCOs is who is responsible especially when we fail. From platoon to the pentagon, it is always an Officer.

It is not about attitude, intellect etc.... I started as a private E-1 and retired as a Colonel, and former Brigade Commander.

You are correct, this is an old argument. But, the military works for the very reasons you say it should be changed. In Business, as well... Heck, in all places, there is a hierarchy.

Command responsibility is the core issue that separates the officers and the rest. Until you understand that, have experienced it, you will not understand it.
