Im trying to to become a doctor and i know the miliary is going to throw me curveballs, however i want the least amount of curveballs coming my way which i hear the ANG is more relaxed in. Is it too late to switch from Army National Guard to Air National Guard? 2018-05-18T23:07:18-04:00 PVT Private RallyPoint Member 3641033

Hi i swore in not to long a ago and feel ive made a mistake.. im suppose to ship out to basic on Sept 25th, i swore to be a combat medic in the army national guard for Ohio. now im thinking i want to be in the Air national guard instead, with what every the equalvalent MOS would be to a combat medic. is it too late? ive read that ANG is more college friendly ( in regards to timing). Don’t go off of hearday and rumors. Every unit is diffferent. As a 1SG in the OHARNG, as long as there is documentation from the school we work with Soldiers. If you don’t have proof from the school how a training event or period hinders your progress in your degree I don’t work with you on it. Example I had a Soldier that claimed drill interfered with his internship, but refused to bring in documentation. He eventually was discharged. Example 2, a Soldier is going for her BSN and she needs a class in the Summer semester to finish her degree next fall. (Private school this class is only offered in the summer) She brought documentation in and wrote a letter requesting excusal from Annual Training. It was granted. So she will finish her degree in the fall instead of a year later. Units will work with you, but you will have to do leg work. Best of luck to you. You will find that being erratic will make your situation much more uncomfortable than well made strategic decisions. A recruiter will be able to answer your question on an Initial Entry Separation, but be prepared for a less than enthusiastic response.

What is a combat medic equivalent in the Air Force/Air National Guard? Is that a position available in the OHANG? What is the delay now to enlist in the OHANG? (It was a year delay at one point) One service over the other as “college friendly” is relative. There are positions in both branch of service that are more or less conducive to your studies.

Making a switch at this point may or may not be possible. (See recruiter) I recommend thoroughly researching what it is you are trying to do. Evaluate why you are joining the military and what you want to get out of the service (just free college or training as well). Curveballs and college friendly readings may not be informed reasons to kill your enlistment. Saw a ANG recruiter and told him I wanted to stay flying. The ANG has aeromedical techs (flying medics) that serve aboard any AF aircraft that is in Medevac mode. No slots for that but, he hooked me up with a Loadmaster slot on C130’s. One of the best jobs in the AF/ANG. No regrets. Flew all over the world, it’s best on a C130 because you stop everywhere and see all kinda shit.
Since you haven’t left for basic yet, you can probably weasel out of the contract. Go talk to an ANG recruiter. I think all the states have some sort of an ANG medical unit with “medtechs” which is their version of 68Ws.
Bonus: You should be able to knock out some credits with the AF Community College.

https://www.goang.com/how-to-join.html

How to Join

Whether you've served in the military before, or haven't thought about it until now, joining the Air National Guard isn't a decision to take lightly.
