It depends; I live in a house that I rent near one of the gates for about $600 less than BAH. About $400-600 of what's left is eaten up in fuel, electricity, and water bills. Count on breaking about even most winter months and having a little extra in the summer. I have always appreciated living off post to keep by work and home lives more separate; if you're asking solely from the financial perspective, I'd say it's a wash.

Absolutely if you find a place that provides heat. I lived one North Pole. When you move out of on base housing you will get hit for thousands of dollars no matter how good the condition is when you leave. Every Soldier I had did.

No, I currently live off but will be moving on in about a month!
If you plan on buying a house it might be worth it but otherwise no.
